What Is The Prevalence Of Temporomandibular Joint (Tmj) Condylar Osteoarthritis In An Asymptomatic Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery Department Population?, John Vorrasi Dds, Laura Mendomo Mvomo

The New York State Dental Journal

The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence and demographics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar changes in the asymptomatic general population of a hospital based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) practice. We retrospectively reviewed cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 272 TMJs from 136 consecutive patients to detect osteophyte, subchondral cyst, sclerosis, cortical erosions, and flattening. While gender did not appear to play a significant role in TMJ pathology, age was positively correlated with prevalence of condylar changes. Patients 78 years and older were significantly more likely to have osteophyte, cyst, sclerosis, and breakdown than were …

Trends And Disparities In Osteoarthritis Prevalence Among Us Adults, 2005–2018, Yingke Xu, Qing Wu Nov 2021

Trends And Disparities In Osteoarthritis Prevalence Among Us Adults, 2005–2018, Yingke Xu, Qing Wu

Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine Faculty Research

Studies reporting trends and disparities of osteoarthritis (OA) in the United States are limited. We aimed to examine trends and disparities of OA prevalence among US adults, from 2005 to 2018. Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005–2006 to 2017–2018 were analyzed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence, stratified by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES), was calculated separately for men and women. The linear trend and the association between the survey cycles and OA prevalence were assessed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence linearly increased in the seven survey cycles (both Plinear trend ≤ 0.0002) in men and …

Prevention And Self-Care Education For Osteoporosis In A Rural Orthopedic Clinic, Jean Sanford Jan 2021

Prevention And Self-Care Education For Osteoporosis In A Rural Orthopedic Clinic, Jean Sanford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract Osteoporosis affects 25 million people in the United States causing over 1.5 million fractures every year. The gap in practice at a rural southeast orthopedic clinic was a lack of patient education on prevention and self-care management of osteoporosis and osteopenia. The purpose of the project was to develop a program to educate clinic providers on prevention and self-care management for osteoporosis and osteopenia. The Knowles theory of adult learning framed the project components. A 10-question pretest/posttest assessing knowledge was administered to 10 registered nurse participants. For the presurvey, five participants demonstrated a lack of knowledge of medication administration …

Prevention And Treatment Of Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis, Mackenzie Devine, Anh Dao Le, Julie Puvogel, Victoria Cho, Michelle Musser Oct 2019

Prevention And Treatment Of Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis, Mackenzie Devine, Anh Dao Le, Julie Puvogel, Victoria Cho, Michelle Musser

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Osteoporosis is a disease state resulting in decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of fracture, specifically of the vertebrae, spine and hip. Risk factors and high risk populations for developing osteoporosis include low BMD, long-term glucocorticoid therapy, genetics, diet, postmenopausal women and patients with inflammatory or chronic disease states. A variety of signaling pathways involving hormones, cytokines and other signaling molecules are involved in bone formation and are affected by long-term glucocorticoid therapy, leading to the development of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO).

There are a variety of drugs that work efficaciously to prevent and treat GIO. Alendronate is a …

Association Of Youth Characteristics And Recent Utilization Of Dental Services In The United States, Ilana R. A. Chertok, Nathaniel Chertok, Zelalem T. Haile, Bhakti Chavan Jan 2018

Association Of Youth Characteristics And Recent Utilization Of Dental Services In The United States, Ilana R. A. Chertok, Nathaniel Chertok, Zelalem T. Haile, Bhakti Chavan

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background: Oral health is important for overall health of youth, although dental service utilization is lower than national goals. The purpose of the study was to identify sociodemographic and health behavioral characteristics of youth in the United States who reported having at least one dental visit in the past 12 months.

Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to examine factors associated with dental care utilization using Andersen’s theory-based Behavioral Model of Health Care Utilization.

Results: Among 5,814 youth, nearly 78 percent reported visiting a dentist in the past 12 months. After adjusting …

The Farnesoid X Receptor Negatively Regulates Osteoclastogenesis In Bone Remodeling And Pathological Bone Loss, Ting Zheng, Ju-Hee Kang, Jung-Sun Sim, Jung-Woo Kim, Jeong-Tae Koh, Chan Soo Shin, Hyungsik Lim, Mijung Yim

Publications and Research

Farnesoid X receptor (FXR, NR1H4) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors. Since the role of FXR in osteoclast differentiation remains ill-defined, we investigated the biological function of FXR on osteoclastogenesis, using FXR-deficient mice. We demonstrated that FXR deficiency increases osteoclast formation in vitro and in vivo. First, FXR deficiency was found to accelerate osteoclast formation via down-regulation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) 1/2 expression. Increased expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 (PGC- 1)β seems to mediate the pro-osteoclastogenic effect of FXR deficiency via the JNK pathway. In …
