Background: Discoid menisci (DM) are oval or disc shaped menisci, differing from the normal crescent shaped meniscus. This difference in shape may be one factor as to why DM are more prone to injury when compared to normal menisci. The purpose of this study was to evaluate potential risk factors that may lead to the development of symptoms, requiring arthroscopic saucerization in adolescents with a history of symptomatic DM in the contralateral extremity. Primary bone and soft-tissue tumors may present by mimicking common sports injuries. Their diagnosis is contingent on maintaining a broad differential. We report a case of a 20-year-old male athlete who sustained a twisting injury to his planted right knee while playing college lacrosse. He was unable to bear weight or fully extend his knee. The team’s orthopaedic surgeon was concerned for a locked knee secondary to a possible flipped meniscal tear. Abstract

Loose bone and cement can promote polyethylene wear that may lead to failure in total knee arthroplasty. The authors propose a technique to enhance the debridement of loose bodies by distracting the cemented components with a lamina spreader following standard debridement with pulsatile lavage. Cement and bone/soft tissue debris was recovered from 51 consecutive primary total knee arthroplasty patients. This technique facilitated the removal of hidden debris in 80% of patients (41/51).
