Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing differences that affect their participation in daily activities and routines. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the U.S. However, Latino children are diagnosed two years later than white children. Latino families still have the greatest disparities in accessing ASD resources throughout the U.S. compared to white families. The lack of ASD services and resources led to decreased parental self-efficacy, quality of life, and increased child behavioral problems.

Increasing Self-Efficacy And Engagement In Occupational Therapy Education Through The Use Of An Unfolding Case Study Curricular Design, Michael J. Jensen

The unfolding case study, which has the case study client evolve over time, has been shown to positively influence both academic and affective performance, though to this point has not been studied in terms of development of self-efficacy in clinical skills or engagement with course content. This study used a quasi-experimental design as well as retrospective data analysis to examine two case study designs (one static or unchanging and one unfolding) within an occupational therapy doctorate program. The study found that occupational therapy students (n = 16) reported a statistically significant difference in the development of clinical skill self-efficacy (p < .05) after engaging in a semester long unfolding case study compared to a semester long static case study. Additionally, the study found that occupational therapy students (n = 47) demonstrated greater engagement with the online curricular content supporting the unfolding case study compared to the static case study (p < .001). The findings of the study suggest that there may be benefits to using an unfolding case study as a curricular design strategy in relation to increased clinical skill self-efficacy and enhanced engagement with course content.

Occupational therapy students need to develop self-efficacy for therapeutic use of self in practice. This longitudinal study examined Norwegian occupational therapy students’ self-efficacy for therapeutic use of self over a 16-month period and investigated predictors of their end-point self-efficacy. One hundred and eleven students from two universities completed a self-efficacy questionnaire related to the use of self after a workshop, and at 3-month, 10-month, and 16-month follow-up. The students’ self-efficacy development was analyzed with linear mixed effect models, while factors associated with self-efficacy were investigated with linear regressions. We sought to investigate whether three protective factors, (physical health, social support, and self-efficacy) predict resilience in Marin County older adults to promote successful aging in place. Fifty-eight Marin County participants aged 62 years and older participated in an exploratory cross-sectional quantitative study. Recruited from senior community programs and personal contacts, participants completed four self-report questionnaires. Descriptive and multivariate analyses using SPSS were conducted to investigate the relationship between the key variables. Post-stroke fatigue is a common problem that may limit participation in everyday activities. Emerging evidence suggests that group-based training in fatigue management may be an efficient means of reducing the effects of post-stroke fatigue. This mixed methods, quasi-experimental study proposed to determine whether a group-based educational program could be successful in relieving post-stroke fatigue and improving participation in daily activities. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to describe the relationship between self-efficacy and social support among overweight and obese adolescents at a weight-management camp. Twenty-three participants completed a pre- and post-camp questionnaire based on modified versions of the GSE Scale and the SSQSR. Additionally, seven females and six males engaged in focus group discussion at the beginning and at the end of camp. Statistical analysis of the modified GSE Scale and SSQSR surveys was completed.
