Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Of Function And Quality Of Life In Individuals With Lower Extremity Lymphedema: A Scoping Review, Rachel A. Dratnol, Laura H. Vanpuymbrouck Jan 2023

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Of Function And Quality Of Life In Individuals With Lower Extremity Lymphedema: A Scoping Review, Rachel A. Dratnol, Laura H. Vanpuymbrouck

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Lower extremity lymphedema (LEL) is more prevalent than lymphedema in other body parts. Assessing lymphedema severity and impact on occupational functioning and quality of life (QOL) is essential to client-centered care in occupational therapy. The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) available to assess QOL and/or level of functioning in individuals with LEL and studies using such assessments.

Method: A search of two online databases (PubMed and CINAHL) yielded 15 studies. A scoping review was completed.

Results: Numerous PROMs were identified in the development and/or validation studies or …

Promoting Self-Management Of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema Through The Remotivation Process, Kaye Rubio, Patricia Bowyer, Sherry Hite, Vidya Pingale, Wyona Freysteinson, Gayle Hersch, Christine Raber Phd, Otr/L

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background. Lymphedema affects a significant number of women with breast cancer. Self-Management Programs (SMP) are important in the long-term management of chronic conditions such as lymphedema. Motivation is crucial in the daily performance of the SMP. The study explored the effect of the Remotivation Process on the motivation of women with breast cancer-related lymphedema to incorporate an SMP into their daily routine.

Methodology. The study was a within-subjects quasi-experimental design that used the Volitional Questionnaire, frequency count of the SMP, and circumferential measurement as outcome measures. Eleven participants (n = 11) with breast cancer-related lymphedema completed the study …

Feasibility And Effectiveness Of A Prehabilitation Program Prior To Breast Cancer Surgery: A Critically Appraised Topic, Emma Choi, Alissa Lee, Kayla Woods, Morgan Mills, Carol Houston May 2022

Feasibility And Effectiveness Of A Prehabilitation Program Prior To Breast Cancer Surgery: A Critically Appraised Topic, Emma Choi, Alissa Lee, Kayla Woods, Morgan Mills, Carol Houston

Master of Occupational Therapy Student Critically Appraised Topics

The purpose of our project is to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of a prehabilitation (prehab) program for patients undergoing breast cancer surgery as compared to only receiving post-surgical rehabilitation. Our clinical mentor has recently obtained certification as a lymphedema specialist and is assisting with the opening of an outpatient mastectomy clinic through the Methodist University systems. Through our research process, we critically appraised two Level II articles, two Level III articles, and one Level IV article. Positive outcomes related to the feasibility were identified, however there is limited significant evidence supporting the effectiveness of the intervention. We recommend using …

The Relationship Between Head And Neck Lymphedema And Dysphagia For Individuals With Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Retrospective Study, Madison A. Cherry Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Head And Neck Lymphedema And Dysphagia For Individuals With Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Retrospective Study, Madison A. Cherry

OT Student Capstones

The American Cancer Society (2022) estimates about 54,000 new cases of oropharyngeal cancer in 2022. Oropharyngeal cancer, a type of head and neck cancer (HNC), typically refers to cancer in the base of tongue, oropharynx, tonsils, or mouth. The American Cancer Society (as cited by Cohen et al., 2016) recommends that physicians assess HNC survivors for lymphedema and refer them to a lymphedema therapist if necessary. Lymphedema presents as soft-tissue swelling and localized accumulation of high-protein fluid that can cause an inflammatory response resulting in disfigurement, tissue fibrosis, functional limitation, pain, and infections (Gutiérrez et al., 2020). There are two …

OT Student Capstones

Background and Purpose. The primary purpose of this doctoral capstone research project was to evaluate the effect of a teletherapy follow-up education program on the participants’ quality of life in lymphedema management. A secondary objective was to determine whether an increase occurred in compliance and independence in the following recommended lymphedema management protocols within the home setting. Methods. A 14-week prospective study design was conducted at Banner Gateway Medical Center (BGMC). Eight female subjects (mean age of 61.88 years) were recruited and randomized into two treatment groups. The control group resumed care as usual. The intervention group participated in a …

Lymphatouch As A Tool For Manual Lymph Drainage: A Therapist's Perspective, Karlie D. Kimball

Occupational Therapy: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Lymphedema, swelling due to impaired flow of lymph fluid, is a result of interrupted lymph circulation of the lymphatic system (McLafferty, Hendry, & Farley, 2012). This project aims to review and synthesize literature regarding the physiology of the lymphatic system, treatment of lymphedema involving the use of manual lymph drainage (MLD), and technology advances in the use of negative pressure in treatment and intervention in lymph flow. In addition to the literature review and synthesis, one Certified Lymphedema Therapist and physical therapist will be interviewed and asked to provide commentary on her experience using an advanced technology, the LymphaTouch®.
