The purpose of this capstone project is to educate educational professionals on multi-sensory approaches and to implement the Stimulating Maturity Through Accelerated Readiness Training (S.M.A.R.T.) program to increase students’ engagement in academic learning. This project used pre- and post-tests to determine baseline knowledge. The occupational therapy student participated in S.M.A.R.T. training, and the junior kindergarten students participated in eight-weeks of S.M.A.R.T. program implementation. The students’ pre- and post-test assessments were completed by the students one-week pre-intervention and following eight weeks of program implementation. Considering the high prevalence of pediatric feeding disorders and the increased need for occupational therapists trained to work with children with feeding challenges, this project sought to provide a better understanding of the key components of a feeding therapy program. These components include caregiver involvement, use of an interdisciplinary team, interventions aimed at sensory integration, and the inclusion of family-centered and motivating interventions. Sensory processing disorder affects between five and 16.5 percent of the population and up to 90% of individuals with disabilities. Occupational therapists are equipped to treat sensory processing difficulties using occupation-based, sensory-based, and client-centered interventions. There is limited evidence on how occupational therapists can use multiple intervention environments including typical sensory gyms, aquatic therapy, and equine-assisted therapy to specifically target sensory processing. This doctoral capstone project was completed through a partnership with the residential department of the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes, a state-wide ministry that cares for children whose families are in crisis. There were two primary focuses for this project: (1) providing sensory integration education to house parents and (2) creating tools to ease transitions. Outcomes included a presentation and training on sensory integration, a booklet with easily accessible sensory integration information, a local activity guide for day visits with families, and a routine schedule of home visits to ease transitions.

The present capstone experience highlights sensory processing differences in relation to occupational performance. Current literature suggests varying evidence on sensory processing differences and effective interventions. This capstone utilizes GAS to measure progress toward functional goals with sensory-based intervention. Results indicate improvements for all five clients in at least one area after 5 to 8 sessions of sensory-based intervention. Improvements noted on GAS demonstrate the effectiveness of sensory-based intervention to address functional differences. The scope of practice for occupational therapy practitioners, therefore, includes sensory-based intervention to improve functional performance and well-being across several settings.

This capstone project encompassed a two-fold focus on advanced clinical practice in the area of sensory integration and research on the effect of sensory integration on the family dynamic. Ayres Sensory Integration was implemented in clinical practice in order to enhance learning, behavior, and participation in individuals with sensory processing disorder and sensory concerns. The research study examined the lived experiences of parents/caregivers of children with sensory processing difficulties to understand how sensory integration has impacted their family dynamic. Objective: The correlation between proprioceptive processing and self-concept in children ages nine to twelve years of age was investigated.

Method: A descriptive research design was used to examine the results of 40 participants ages 9 to 12 years using the Comprehensive Observations of Proprioception (COP) and the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale: 3rd Edition (Piers Harris 3). Participants were recruited through convenience sampling and snowballing strategies. Pearson product moment correlation (r) analyses were used to examine the correlation between variables.

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of sensory diets in the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the use of sensory diets among California occupational therapy practitioners. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data through an online survey. The survey was sent out to members of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC) and received 98 respondents within one month. Participants worked among various clinical settings and implemented sensory diets with various client populations. The aim of this study was to discover how a movement program, utilizing principles of dance and sensory integration, effects motor and sensory outcomes for children with sensorimotor impairments. Participants' motor performance was assessed using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency prior to and following participation in the movement program. Additionally, sensory function was assessed using the Child Sensory Profile prior to participation, and sensory modulation was tracked throughout the program. A four-week single subject (A-B) research design examined the effects of gum chewing on classroom performance in two 2nd grade boys with a diagnosis of ADHD. This study focused on three variables: on-task behaviors, task completion, and quality of work. Data, using visual analogue scales, on these three variables were collected during 12 writing periods. The researcher observed and documented the participants’ on-task behaviors, and the teacher scored the participants’ quality and amount of work completed on writing assignments.
