The profession of nursing has recognized in the past 20 years the need for graduate nurses to enter the profession prepared to care for complex medical patients in an ever-changing healthcare environment. Background: In the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) 2020 annual survey, nursing schools turned away 66,274 entry-level applications to baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States due to a faculty shortage and clinical placement sites (AACN, 2021).

Local Problem: Hospitals need more qualified nurses to meet community needs. The need for clinical faculty and additional clinical placement sites disrupts the workforce pipeline through local nursing schools. A new approach to clinical education is needed to prepare more students for the growing complexities of independent nursing practice.

Background: Minority nurse leader presence at the executive leadership level is suboptimal, with insufficient pathways to increase representation. The lack of diversity in executive leadership threatens efforts to improve patient care and reduce disparities (Jerome Harris, 2021).

Local Problem: Practices to increase the diversity of executive nurse leaders at a pediatric medical center have had very little to no impact. Frontline nurses and nurse executives are not racially or ethnically representative of the increasingly minority patient populations served.

While nurses in direct patient care are serving a growing minority population, nurse executives are not racially representative of the patient population. This integrated review sought to understand the benefits of formal mentorship. Results included 2 themes: increasing diversity and self-efficacy through formal mentorship. The themes are explored in the literature. Implications for organizations and leaders will be discussed.

Nursing leadership remains a critical factor during healthcare transformation. Nurse leaders who promote healthy working conditions have been associated with positive nurse and unit outcomes. However, mechanisms to explain how they influence outcomes are not understood (Cummings et al., 2018). Conger and Kanungo’s (1988) Process Model of Empowerment provided a framework to examine how leader empowering behaviour (LEB) influenced experienced nurses’ self-efficacy (SE), interprofessional collaboration (IPC), job turnover intentions (JTI) and nurse-assessed adverse patient outcomes (NAAE).

In the hospital setting, prevention of failure-to-rescue (FTR) events is an important aspect of patient safety. The use of patient simulation as a strategy to educate nurses on the prevention of these events offers two modes of learning: 1) experiential learning through simulation and 2) reflection through debriefing. The act of practicing to recognize a deteriorating patient through experiential learning and reflection may help increase nurses’ self-efficacy in recognizing a similar situation in their future practice. These human induced and naturally occurring events have affected over 4.6 billion people, and are not discriminatory to region or community (World Health Organization, 2011). Second-Year Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Self-Efficacy in Relation to Simulation Lab Experiences utilized a convenience sample of second-year associate degree nursing students to conduct a survey of their perceptions of an increase in self-efficacy or self confidence in relation to their simulation lab experiences. Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy was the theoretical framework for the study. Students who have high levels of self-efficacy have been shown to handle obstacles with less stress, perseverance, and success.
