Problem: Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection that remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Based off results obtained from a pre-education survey of nurses on a medical-surgical unit in a large hospital organization, there is an opportunity to increase knowledge and confidence level regarding sepsis and care of septic patients so that nurses are prepared to detect sepsis early and intervention can begin.

This literature review is aimed at synthesizing studies conducted to determine the efficacy of the teach-back method with this specific patient population.

Methods: Electronic searches of CINAHL and PubMed were performed through James Madison University libraries. Articles selected for inclusion were evaluated for study design, relevance, and sample size.

Background: Specimen acceptance rates continue to fall outside of the recommended target rate of 98% or higher at a specific ED. Adverse effects of ED lead to a complicated recovery from anesthesia due to the risk of self-inflicted injury of patients, the disturbance of surgical incisions, the development of postoperative maladaptive behaviors, and the increased use of sedatives and analgesics resulting in prolonged recovery time and delayed discharge from the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The purpose of this capstone project was to better understand Registered Nurses' knowledge level of commonly taught heart failure education topics. Heart failure is a large reason for hospital readmissions, and subsequently, a major contributor to rising health care costs. Research for this project was completed at a Regional Midwestern hospital using a questionnaire consisting of 20 knowledge questions. Registered nurses working on three separate units with high volumes of heart failure patients were invited to participate.
