The national average nurse turnover rate was 18.2% in 2017 (Ackerson & Stiles, 2018). A contributing factor for nursing turnout rates was nurse burnout and compassion fatigue (Barratt, 2018; Cleary, Kornhaber, Thapa, West, & Visentin, 2018; Cope, Jones, & Hendricks, 2016; Magtibay, Chesak, Coughlin, & Sood, 2017; Delaney, 2018; Manomenidis, Panagopoulou, & Montgomery, 2019; Poulsen, 2015). Electronic Health Record (EHR) in-basket results (e.g., lab results, pathology reports, etc.) must be reviewed and acted upon in a timely manner by clinical staff in order to provide safe and effective care to ambulatory patients. Delays in reading results are significant contributors to medical errors. A large backlog of in-basket results that have never been appropriately filed is both a safety concern and a symptom of other clinical workflow issues. The purpose was to examine the effect of a self-care educational intervention on nursing student resilience and thus the potential for compassion fatigue, depersonalization, burnout, depression, and inadequate self-care. A one-group pretest-posttest research design was applied to a convenience sample of 104 nursing students near the end of their last semester in a baccalaureate nursing program. The measurements were demographics, a psychometric resilience scale, program evaluation, and reflection question. Oncology nurses provide care to patients during some of the toughest times in their lives. This care places nurses at risk of developing compassion fatigue which can have negative long-term health impacts. There is currently no formal compassion fatigue education offered to oncology nurses. This lack of training leaves nurses vulnerable to the impacts of unmanaged stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. This benchmark project was completed to bring awareness to the need for a mindfulness-based compassion fatigue course. This course will provide oncology nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage these difficult emotions.

Problem The emergency department (ED) is a high-stress environment. Nurses exposed to this stress for prolonged periods are subject to compassion fatigue (CF). The purpose of this quality improvement project was to identify and reduce the level of CF in ED nurses by implementing Real Time Transformative Response© (RTR). RTR© is a technique that uses combinations of neurofeedback response awareness, biofield therapy intervention, and clearing of unwanted energy.

Maslach and Leiter determined burnout to be caused by three major components: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficiency. This literature review focuses on factors that directly contribute to new graduate nurse burnout. Major factors discussed in this paper are differences in expectations versus reality, influences from past education, developing professional identity, and the effect of the workplace environment on new graduate transition.
