Ecg For All Patients In The Pacu: Some Say, Why? I Say, Why Not?, Paula Foran
Ecg For All Patients In The Pacu: Some Say, Why? I Say, Why Not?, Paula Foran
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
Currently in many Australian hospitals, electrocardiogram (ECG) leads are removed after the operative process and, despite the machines being freely available in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), they are not connected to all patients.
There are many evidence-based reasons why an ECG would be advantageous for perioperative patient safety, including the detection of often asymptomatic conditions such as myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) and new-onset atrial fibrillation, which has been shown to increase the risk of stroke. Advantages may also be seen in saving precious minutes in a cardiac arrest, and the ability for nurses to constantly observe …
Individual Characteristics And Shared Decision Making For Stroke Prevention In Atrial Fibrillation, Patricia Nadraus
Individual Characteristics And Shared Decision Making For Stroke Prevention In Atrial Fibrillation, Patricia Nadraus
Theses & Dissertations
With the advent of patient-centered care, individuals with Afib are asked to participate in the shared decision-making (SDM) process. Choosing therapies in thromboembolic risk reduction is complex, involves trade-offs along with considering risks and benefits of therapeutics. Afib affects between 2.7 million and 6.1 million American adults (January et al., 2014), and with the growing elderly population that number is expected to double by 2030 (Colilla et al., 2013). In 2016 Medicare required a SDM process for individuals considering left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. There have been no studies reported examining individual characteristics and participating in SDM in individuals …

Management Of Atrial Fibrillation With Smartphone Technology, Teresa Praus
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia affecting over six million people; it is predicted to increase two-fold by the year 2050. This arrhythmia results in a lack of
atrial/ventricular communication, accompanied by ineffective atrial contraction, suboptimal ventricular filling, and thrombus formation. This may lead to stroke, and ultimately heart failure. The current economic burden related to the complications of atrial fibrillation is estimated to be greater than $6 billion annually with potentially catastrophic events, further increasing expenditure.
When patients experience symptoms related to atrial fibrillation, it is common for them to present to a hospital emergency department. These visits, …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract In a multidisciplinary health care team, nurses are often the initial contact when patients present for clinical evaluation. Thus, it is of great importance that these nurses provide education to patients that is current and evidence-based. The target population of this project was nurses who care for patients with atrial fibrillation (A-Fib). The practice problem was the knowledge gap related to A-Fib. The purpose of the project was to provide an evidence-based, nursing education intervention to increase their knowledge. The practice-focused question sought to determine whether participation in the evidence-based education intervention increased nurses’ knowledge scores about providing care …
