Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Activities Via Smartphone In Advanced Practice Providers: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project To Reduce Perceived Stress, Burnout, And Intent To Leave, Cynthia L. Larsen-Bednarchik

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Burnout, attrition, and decreased work engagement among Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are growing concerns and can have a negative influence on health care provider wellbeing. Chronic workplace stress is linked to various physical health problems, such as fatigue, insomnia, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and obesity. Chronic provider burnout is costly and extends to organizations and hospitals due to higher attrition, increased absenteeism, and decreased work engagement. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs focus on the intent of practicing mindfulness to cultivate a state of being that is nonjudgmental, openhearted, friendly, curious, accepting, and compassionate. MBSR programs afford clinicians a way …

Exploration Of Mindfulness Among Ethnic Minority Undergraduate Nursing Students, Amber Young-Brice, Kristina Dreifuerst

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background. Meeting projected needs for ethnically diverse nurses depends on a strong pipeline of diverse students within nursing programs. Colleges assume students readily navigate the university; however, this may not be the reality especially among ethnic minority students.

Purpose. The purpose was to explore the concept of mindfulness among ethnic minority nursing students. Exploring mindfulness, and a lack thereof, may provide strategies for overcoming challenges ethnic minority students experience in prelicensure nursing programs.

Methods. A qualitative study using thematic analysis of semistructured in-depth interviews was conducted with 20 ethnic minority undergraduate nursing students.

Results. Themes that emerged reveal positive associations …

Reducing Burnout Among Mental Health Providers Using A Mindfulness Intervention., Joy Lindsey-Buckler

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Burnout has been recognized as a barrier to quality care and expected patient outcomes for nearly 50 years (Freudenberger, 1974). Burnout, an “occupational phenomenon”, a syndrome of untreated chronic work-place stress, (WHO, 2019). Burnout has three factors: emotional exhaustion described as depletion of energy, depersonalization characterized by, increased levels of detachment; finally, reduced feelings of personal accomplishment with reduced feelings of professional efficacy. Health care providers (HCPs), Mental Health Providers (MHPs) and staff providing care in substance use disorder programs, experience high levels of burnout. Mindfulness practices have demonstrated efficacy in reducing burnout among HCPs.

Purpose: The purpose of …

Background: Stress has been shown to increase glucose levels through a sympathetic physiological response resulting in a release of chemicals such as adrenalin and cortisol, a response which results in an even greater need for insulin. Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes may not be able to change or decrease the amount of stress in their lives but they may be able to …

The Effects Of Meditation In Lowering Blood Pressure And Reducing Symptoms Of Stress In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Isabella Fleming May 2019

The Effects Of Meditation In Lowering Blood Pressure And Reducing Symptoms Of Stress In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Isabella Fleming

Honors Theses

Hypertension and stress are two conditions that have the capability to cause extensive and long-term damage to both mental and physical health. Baccalaureate nursing students report high levels of stress while in the process of obtaining a degree. This population is at risk for consistently high stress levels; therefore, they are also at risk for physiologic complications of stress such as hypertension.

In this study, all participants were asked to complete two short surveys: one assessed their stress, and one survey assessed their perceptions of meditation. The blood pressure (BP) of all participants was measured as well. Once the surveys …

Meditation As An Intervention To Help College Students Cope With Stress, Marissa Bottos Apr 2019

Meditation As An Intervention To Help College Students Cope With Stress, Marissa Bottos

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

According to the American College Health Association (ACHA) (2017), in a survey of 31,463 students, 31.7% stated that stress negatively impacts their academic performance (lower grades, dropped course, etc.). Additionally, 45.1% of the students stated they have more than average stress levels. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if mindfulness meditation was effective in helping college students cope with stress. Based on current evidence, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s online application for mindfulness meditation is supported as an effective way to help college students cope with stress (Regehr et al. 2013; Yusufov et al. 2018; Cavanagh et al. …

Stress Reduction: Mindful Mandalas, Olivia Parrott, Carolyn Gillespie, Krystal Klag, Eleke Bonsi, Jenn Smith

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Mental Health is an ever-increasing topic of discussion in several sectors of today’s society. One career, law enforcement, seems to correlate job-related responsibilities with rising numbers in post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. A group of nursing students from Olivet Nazarene University sought to incorporate their understanding of stressors associated with the helping profession of law enforcement while researching cost-effective, evidence-based, self-care methods that have a proven ability to reduce signs of depression and anxiety. One such method is the practice of mindfulness.

Mindfulness must be understood fundamentally before it may be useful in practice in reducing the effects of …

The Efficacy Of Meditation-Based Treatments In Relapse Prevention For Persons With Substance Use Disorders, Florence C. Bates

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Substance abuse is a global problem that has contributed to a variety of societal, financial, health, and familial strains. An increasing prevalence of illicit drug, prescription opioids, and alcohol abuse has created a need for re-evaluation of recovery and relapse treatments. This literature review examines the efficacy of meditation-based treatments for relapse prevention in persons recovering from Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). A comparative analysis of Mindfulness Based Relapse Programs (MBRP), an adapted MBRP-W program, and a Transcendental Meditation (TM) intervention was used to examine the success of meditation-based interventions. Research supports improvements associated with the meditation-based interventions including significant reductions …

Evaluating Interventions To Mitigate Compassion Fatigue Among At-Risk Nursing Populations, Emily R. Derayunan Jan 2019

Evaluating Interventions To Mitigate Compassion Fatigue Among At-Risk Nursing Populations, Emily R. Derayunan

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis examined the experience of compassion fatigue in nurses through analysis of research studies conducted within the past ten years. A literature review was completed using CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases. Efficacy of current management strategies and interventions was evaluated. Findings indicate that educating nurses working in high-risk units improves self-recognition and lowers compassion fatigue levels. Institutional factors such as a lack of managerial support and organizational commitment contribute to the experience of compassion fatigue. An organization's involvement in maximizing compassion satisfaction through meaningful recognition of nurses' contributions to care and implementation of organizational prevention …

Improving Nurse Well-Being Through A Mindfulness-Based Education Strategy, Sandra Dearholt Jan 2019

Improving Nurse Well-Being Through A Mindfulness-Based Education Strategy, Sandra Dearholt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract

An estimated 33% to 54% of hospital nurses exhibit signs of emotional stress and

decreased well-being, which is associated with a negative impact on nurses’ health, job

performance, patient care outcomes, and healthcare cost. This project sought to improve

nurse well-being by providing nurses with education on mindfulness-based practices.

The practice question addressed whether implementing a mindfulness-based education

strategy for nurses improved nurse well-being. Three models informed this project: the

health promotion model, the andragogical model, and Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels of training

evaluation. Sources of evidence included the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and a

knowledge assessment administered to 10 …
