The Effect Of High Flow Nasal Cannula Weaning Protocol On Decreasing Length Of Stay In Pediatric Intensive Care., Debbie Farrell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is a type of non-invasive respiratory support that has decreased the rate of intubation in infants and children. It is utilized in the PICU and the wards. Due to the increased volume of patients on HFNC, a standard HFNC weaning protocol was created to improve the management of these patients.

Methods: Potential patients were identified through the Virtual Pediatric System (VPS) with the criteria of ages 1 month to 6 years old, admitted to the PICU during the months of January to March of 2018 and 2019, with diagnosis of bronchiolitis and requiring HFNC. Chart …

Improving Acute Pain Management For Pediatric Patients: Development Of A Ketamine Infusion Protocol, Oksana Koeppen

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Multimodal analgesia is a recommended approach for acute pain management for adults and children (ASA, 2012; Chou et al., 2016). This approach is becoming a prominent modality in pain control strategies in the pediatric population. An intravenous anesthetic, ketamine, may be a useful adjunct for acute pain management in children. Development of a pediatric ketamine infusion protocol and its subsequent introduction to the key stakeholders at the host facility in central Illinois were the focus of this project. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of low-dose intravenous ketamine in acute pain management when used as an adjunct to other medications (Asadi …

Improving Acute Postoperative Pain Management For The Pediatric Patient: Guidelines On The Use Of Intravenous Dexmedetomidine, Jenna Winters May 2019

Improving Acute Postoperative Pain Management For The Pediatric Patient: Guidelines On The Use Of Intravenous Dexmedetomidine, Jenna Winters

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Inadequately treated surgical pain in children leads to risky complications, such as longer recovery times, infection, prolonged hospitalizations, readmissions, altered pain sensitivity, neurophysiological changes, and cognitive-behavioral abnormalities (Campbell, 2013; Ibrahim, Jones, Lai, & Tan, 2016). Review of the literature indicated intravenous dexmedetomidine, as an adjunct, may lead to improved outcomes and a reduction in postoperative pain in children undergoing surgical intervention. An evidenced-based educational presentation introduced intravenous dexmedetomidine in children to anesthesia professionals, pharmacy staff, and the pediatric care team at a tertiary care center. Concluding the educational presentation, participants completed a voluntary survey evaluating the effectiveness of the presentation. …

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a prominent chronic illness in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016) estimated that one child out of every 365 African-American births will have SCD, affecting approximately 100,000 Americans. Supporting and promoting the integrity of the family and its’ members when a child has SCD is important for each family member’s well-being. Specific family characteristics, such as resilience and coping are important to understand because they can mitigate stress and create positive family outcomes (Brown et al., 1993; Cousino & Hazen, 2013; Hildenbrand, Barakat, Alderfer, & Marsac, 2015; O’Hanlon, Camic, & …

Implementation Of The Vaccines For Children Program In A Midwest, Urban Clinic Dedicated To The Underserved Population, Akmal Saydazamov

Doctoral Projects

Background: Low immunization rates weaken herd immunity and endanger children. Objectives: SNHC implemented the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program in order to increase the vaccination rates among the underserved population.

Methods: As an efficacy study, the project focused on three major areas in the VFC implementation – cost, staff preparedness and patient need. Cost was determined by utilizing electronic medical records (EMR) and …

Measuring Polyvictimization Among Vulnerable Children: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Kelli J. Jones Apr 2019

Measuring Polyvictimization Among Vulnerable Children: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Kelli J. Jones

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this study was to test the pathways to polyvictimization model, a conceptual model developed by Dr. David Finkelhor, as an accurate measure of victimization among children in fragile families. Polyvictimization is the simultaneous, accumulative exposure to multiple forms of victimization. Finkelhor’s pathways to polyvictimization model consisted of four hypothesized pathways to becoming polyvictimized. The four pathways include a) residing in a dangerous community, b) living in a dangerous family, c) having a chaotic, multi-problem family environment, and d) the child has emotional or behavioral problems that increase risk behavior, engender antagonism, and compromise the capacity to protect …
