Reconciling Incongruencies: Examining The Meaning And Influencing Factors Of Oncology Nurses' Professional Quality Of Life, Rebecca Lynne Boni

Nurses often witness suffering and loss. These experiences are intrinsic to the practice of nursing and can exert a strong, cumulative effect on nurses’ professional quality of life (QOL). Stamm (2010b) conceptualizes professional QOL as a composite of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. Inferior professional QOL has been linked to numerous negative healthcare outcomes. Oncology nurses are particularly vulnerable to compassion fatigue. The Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), created by Stamm (2009), is the current survey used to measure professional QOL, but it may not be specific enough for oncology nurses.

Abstract
Burnout, attrition, and decreased work engagement among Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are growing concerns and can have a negative influence on health care provider wellbeing. Chronic workplace stress is linked to various physical health problems, such as fatigue, insomnia, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and obesity. Chronic provider burnout is costly and extends to organizations and hospitals due to higher attrition, increased absenteeism, and decreased work engagement. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs focus on the intent of practicing mindfulness to cultivate a state of being that is nonjudgmental, openhearted, friendly, curious, accepting, and compassionate. Nurses working in high-intensity settings experience burnout at higher rates than in other nursing areas. Burnout in healthcare is a problem estimated as high as 70% by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Problem: Nurses face a variety of stressors that can result in decreased levels of compassion satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a computerized interactive social assist robot (PARO) to decrease stressors and increase compassion levels of acute care nurses in an inpatient setting.

Although research is available studying the effects of staff nurse empowerment and burnout, literature is sparse relative to evaluation of nurse manager empowerment and burnout. Problem: Burnout in healthcare has been reported as high as 35% for hospital nurses in acute care and occurs at higher rates in high-intensity settings. Burnout can lead to depressive symptoms, which can lead to suicidal ideation in affected healthcare providers and warrants further attention.

Burnout syndrome among nurses, especially within the critical care setting, has been a persistent and increasingly prevalent problem in the healthcare field. This systematic review aims to explore the common causes of burnout among nurses associated with working in a critical care setting. Twenty-five peer-reviewed articles, published between the years of 2000 and 2018, were selected for analysis and synthesis using the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Compassion fatigue (CF), also known as secondary traumatic stress (STS), impacts critical care nurses (CCN) through exposure to pain, suffering, and loss of those for whom they provide care and results in a reduction of compassion satisfaction (CS). High incidence of CF and turnover (TO) rates at the project site were identified among CCNs. The institution's CCN TO rate was at 81% in comparison to peers in other areas at 29%â35%. When compassion is compromised, such as with compassion fatigue (CF), not only is patient care compromised, but also caregivers can be physically and psychologically affected, resulting in stress and burnout. The purpose of this project was to create a web-based educational toolkit focused on prevention of CF, establish the content validity of the elements in this toolkit, and make recommendations regarding its implementation and sustainability. Investigation of these areas may help illuminate unnecessary healthcare costs that are associated with these phenomena.
