Building Allas: Creation Of An Asthma And Allergies App, Benjamin J. Cochran Dec 2016

Building Allas: Creation Of An Asthma And Allergies App, Benjamin J. Cochran

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The purpose of this project was to determine the potential need for an app to allow patients to self-manage their asthma and allergies. Through a substantial literature review, the need for an app as well as a desire for this population to manage their disease was demonstrated. Determination was made to have three separate components to create an all-inclusive app, an education component, an asthma tracker, and a personalized allergy profile. The app was storyboarded before being sent to providers and small focus group for proof of concept and functionality of components. The app, ALLAS, was constructed and housed on …

Implementing Spirometry-Driven Evidence-Based Asthma Care In A Primary Care Practice, Douglas C. Rau Aug 2016

Implementing Spirometry-Driven Evidence-Based Asthma Care In A Primary Care Practice, Douglas C. Rau

Doctoral Projects

This project was a quality improvement initiative employing an educational intervention to increase the awareness and stress the importance of utilizing spirometry in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of asthma. Clinical support staff received training on how to perform spirometry and providers received education on the interpretation and utility of spirometry results to drive care to improve outcomes for clients with asthma. Project outcomes examined the self-rated confidence to perform and interpret spirometry before and after the intervention and the subsequent utilization pattern of office-based spirometry at the primary care clinic. For clinical support staff, the self-comfort level at performing …

A Feasibility Study Of Just-In-Time Asthma Self-Management Intervention, Phillip Charles Scruggs Aug 2016

A Feasibility Study Of Just-In-Time Asthma Self-Management Intervention, Phillip Charles Scruggs

Masters Theses

Quality asthma care requires not only an initial diagnosis, but long term follow up care and education on long term control. Preventable symptoms continue to reduce the quality of life for chronic asthma sufferers and place an unnecessary burden on emergency services and the health care system at large. A mobile health (mHealth) solution is proposed to effectively improve outcomes for patients while ultimately reducing the overall burden of mismanagement on the healthcare system as a whole. The Just-in-Time Asthma Self- Management and Intervention (JASMIN) system provides a way for a patient or user to track, self-manage, and interact with …

Evaluating The Use Of The Asthma Action Plan And The Asthma Control Test By Providers In A Primary Care Office After Implementation Into The Electronic Health Record, Claudia N. Turkson-Ocran

Doctoral Projects

Asthma is a life-long chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows a person’s airway. Asthma results in recurring periods of chest tightness, wheezing with inspiration and/or expiration, shortness of breath, nighttime or early morning coughing, and trouble sleeping as a result of coughing and wheezing. An asthma exacerbation occurs when asthma symptoms worsen enough to require medical intervention or self-administration of oral corticosteroids. Exacerbations can be graded in severity as mild, moderate, severe, and life threatening. An asthma action plan (AAP) is a written treatment plan developed collaboratively between the health care professional and the patient for self-management and maintenance …

Is Dietary Intervention A Viable Method For Improving Outcomes In Adult Patients With Asthma?, Jennifer Grolimund Apr 2016

Is Dietary Intervention A Viable Method For Improving Outcomes In Adult Patients With Asthma?, Jennifer Grolimund

Senior Honors Theses

Asthma is a disease process characterized by episodic inflammation of the lower airway in response to various triggers. Those with asthma have trouble breathing effectively during an acute episode, making asthma a potentially life threatening condition. Standard medical treatment of asthma, including medications and environmental changes, can be effective at reducing or eliminating negative outcomes in patients with asthma. However, a holistic approach to patient care, including an examination of dietary influence, may also be useful for patients trying to manage the course of their illness. Variations in intake of individual nutrients or in total dietary patterns may play a …

School Nurse Perceptions And Decisions About Children Self-Carrying Inhalers In School, Lisa Anne Dominguez Jaurigue Jan 2016

School Nurse Perceptions And Decisions About Children Self-Carrying Inhalers In School, Lisa Anne Dominguez Jaurigue

Dissertations

Every state in the United States has passed legislation allowing students to self-carry rescue inhalers in the school setting. Many organizations are stakeholders in respiratory issues, school health issues, and pediatric issues, recommending the support of this practice. Students’ ability to self-carrying rescue inhalers in the school setting has been impacted by school nurse perceptions and decision-making. This study addressed the questions: (a) What are school nurse perceptions and attitudes in regard to children self-carrying inhalers in the school setting? (b) How do school nurses decide whether children can self-carry inhalers in the school setting? and, (c) Are school districts …

Advanced Practitioner Provided Pre-Hospital Discharge Asthma Education, Lyndsay E. Gardner Jan 2016

Advanced Practitioner Provided Pre-Hospital Discharge Asthma Education, Lyndsay E. Gardner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Asthma is a leading cause of pediatric hospital admissions. Parents of children under the age of 18 with asthma require education to recognize and manage the signs and symptoms of the disease. Parent education has shown to decrease their children's hospital admission and readmission rates. The purpose of this pilot project was to develop an asthma educational module for the parents of children with asthma and obtain parent feedback on the content. Families with children under the age of 18 who had been admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of asthma, an asthma exacerbation, or status asthmaticus were invited …

Guideline Use In Asthma Management In Primary Care Setting: A Systematic Review, Nkiru Ezeani Ezeani Jan 2016

Guideline Use In Asthma Management In Primary Care Setting: A Systematic Review, Nkiru Ezeani Ezeani

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease that is characterized by reversible airway obstruction due to hyper-responsiveness of the tracheobronchial tree. The condition disproportionately affects male children, females, and the aged globally, and its prevalence keeps rising despite being a preventable condition in terms of relapse. Most asthmatic patients receive care in primary care settings. Various health agencies have developed asthma management guidelines to improve the quality of asthma care; however, in some cases, adherence to these guidelines is substandard. The overarching aim of this study was to determine whether primary care providers manage asthma in line with the available …

Patterns Of Asthma Exacerbation Related To Climate And Weather In The Northeast Kingdom Of Vermont, Quincy Mckenzie Campbell

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by long- and short-term inflammation and bronchospasm susceptible to multiple triggers that affects patients across the lifespan. Asthma management is a primary care priority in Vermont, where there continues to be an above-average prevalence of asthma among both children and adults as compared to other states. However, many of Vermont's children and especially adults with asthma are not participating in regular check-ups for asthma management that would best prevent exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Several climate and weather elements including, but not limited to, extreme temperatures and particulate matter are known asthma triggers. Vermont's …
