While much research has been done on student perceptions of simulation and the fact most learning occurs in the post-simulation debriefing session, little research has been done on how learning takes place in debriefing. Nurse practitioner faculty also use simulation as a teaching methodology, but the implementation of debriefing methods and faculty experiences with debriefing sessions are not known. BACKGROUND: Providing adequate primary health care is problematic in Africa. The World Health Organization and International Council of Nurses proposed that nurses, specifically advanced practice nurse practitioners with the requisite skills in disease prevention, diagnosis and management, can be key to solving the primary care issue.

Introduction

This study aimed to gain an understanding of practicing acute care pediatric nurse practitioners’ (AC-PNPs’) perceptions of themselves as leaders in both clinical and professional contexts.

Method

This qualitative study was conducted at a midwestern quaternary care children's hospital. Cultural domain analysis, semistructured interviews, and free listing techniques were employed to identify areas of consensus and variation among a convenience sample of AC-PNPs.

Results

Findings demonstrated the AC-PNPs have a limited self-view of leadership.

Discussion

Nurse practitioners need additional leadership capacity and capability building during graduate education, the transition to practice, and throughout their careers.

Medical coding and billing errors are avoidable problems that have afflicted practitioners for decades. Correct coding and billing are required for reimbursement of healthcare services. Fraud, waste and abuse increase healthcare costs, reduce the quality of care provided and directly impact costs to patients. This pilot study was intended to evaluate the impact of an educational webinar on medical billing and coding, fraud, waste and abuse on nurse practitioner (NP) knowledge using a pretest posttest design. Workforce data reinforces the notion that educating nurse practitioners in Virginia is critical in helping to improve access to care in the Commonwealth, particularly in underserved communities. Six of Virginia’s thirty-nine state funded colleges and universities offer nurse practitioner programs. All of these universities report their capacity to train nurse practitioners is not limited by qualified applicants but rather by a shortage of clinical preceptors. This paper provides a summary of public policy initiatives that support preceptors as an example for Virginia to consider.

Background: The need for greater flexibility is often used to justify reforms that redistribute tasks through the workforce. However, "flexibility" is never defined or empirically examined. This study explores the nature of flexibility in a team of emergency doctors, nurse practitioners (NPs), and registered nurses (RNs), with the aim of clarifying the concept of workforce flexibility. OBJECTIVE: To compare usage patterns and outcomes of a nurse practitioner-staffed medical ICU and a resident-staffed physician medical ICU.

DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of 1,157 medical ICU admissions from March 2012 to February 2013.

SETTING: Large urban academic university hospital.

SUBJECTS: One thousand one hundred fifty-seven consecutive medical ICU admissions including 221 nurse practitioner-staffed medical ICU admissions (19.1%) and 936 resident-staffed medical ICU admissions (80.9%).

Background: Across the country, nursing students are experiencing alarming amounts of stress. While stress is a common phenomenon, it has been shown to negatively impact nursing student performance and general health. One solution to this issue is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). Reported effects of MBSR include stress reduction; mindfulness; improvements in self-esteem; increase in general health; a decrease in anxiety; and an increase in empathy. The purpose of this literature review is to outline a health promotion plan for healthcare providers and diabetes educators, using erectile dysfunction (ED) as a motivational tool to change health behaviors for men with diabetes. Because the most severe complications might not manifest themselves until later in life, patients with either type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are less likely to make the dramatic behavioral changes necessary to control their diabetes at the time of diagnosis. The Institute of Medicine report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” makes specific recommendations for removing barriers to advanced practice nursing scope of practice. The report also makes important recommendations concerning interdisciplinary teamwork. This article examines the challenges on the professional working relationship between nurse practitioners and pharmacists and provides some insight into the difficulties faced as health care practitioners attempt to work toward the goal of collaborative efforts to advance the care of our patients.

Nurse practitioners need to be effective in responding to large-scale natural and man-made disasters. However, disaster core competencies for NPs are largely nonexistent. The purpose of this study was to assess NPs' level of disaster preparedness and determine how NPs acquired knowledge about disaster preparation. Findings suggest that a consistent national NP curriculum for disaster preparedness, including communication with other disaster agencies, is needed. With proper education, NPs can play a major role in disaster management.
