Introduction: Due to advances in disease management, mortality rates in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) have decreased. However, mortality rates for young adults (YA) increased, and understanding of social and psychological factors is critical. The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with health care transition experiences for YA with SCD.

Method: This was a qualitative descriptive study. A 45-minute semistructured interview was conducted with 13 YA (M = 21.5 years, SD = 1.73).

Results: Results suggest that social and psychological factors and self-management experiences influence health care transition. Eight themes emerged: “need for accessible support”; “early …

Gender Based Violence And Health Effects, Tazeen Saeed Ali Dec 2019

Gender Based Violence And Health Effects, Tazeen Saeed Ali

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Gender Based Violence (GBV) violates the basic human right of a person’s physical, sexual and emotional integrity and health ([i]) such that globally, one out of every three women is subject to some form of violence, ranging from verbal and physical abuse to emotional blackmailing and psychological torture eventually leading to futile despair and hopelessness. The ironical perception of gender equality in our society is the root cause of gender based violence, with women being more afflicted by such a form of gender discrimination than men. [i]. Benner's Model And Duchscher's Theory: Providing The Framework For Understanding New Graduate Nurses' Transition To Practice, Melanie Murray, Deborah Sundin, Vicki Cope

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The transition to quality and safety in the new graduate registered nurses' practice remains problematic directly impacting patient outcomes. Effective mentoring during transition serves to enhance experiential learning, allowing the development and establishment of safe, quality nursing practice. Comprehensive understanding of the transition process, including the barriers and effective enablers to transition is the key to effective mentoring. A theoretical framework guided by Duchscher's Stages of Transition Theory and Transition Shock Model and Benner's From novice to expert model can facilitate such understanding. Nurse Theorists play an important part in shaping nurse education and practice and have provided nurse educators …

The Nurse’S Role In Prognosis-Related Communication In Pediatric Oncology Nursing Practice, Amy Rose Newman, Lauri Linder, Kristin Haglund

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The experiences of pediatric oncology nurses with prognosis-related communication (PRC) remain largely unknown. The purpose of this article is to report results of focus groups wherein 15 pediatric oncology nurses from three Midwestern pediatric cancer programs provided descriptions of PRC and how they experience PRC within their daily practice. Data from focus groups were analyzed via an interpretive descriptive approach, which resulted in three themes: (1) nurses’ operational definition of PRC, (2) nurses’ roles in PRC, and (3) nurses’ preparation for engagement in PRC. From discussions within the focus groups, nurses recognized that PRC occurs across a continuum. Nurses distinguished …

PMG Oregon currently schedules approximately 60,000 New Patient visits each year. New patients are often seen at their first visit, with very little, and/or, without most up-to-date medical information transferred to their new clinical care team. The delay or lack of information results in challenges to our clinic teams to provide the best care for our new patients. It also results in providers/care teams spending additional time entering clinical data either during the new patient appointment, after the appointment, and often additional appointments are needed to address patient problems that could be completed in the initial visit.

Implementing A Plan Of Care For Hypertension, Rebecca Hamlin

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Introduction: Providers routinely document what the next steps in treatment will be for patients who have elevated blood pressure during their office visit. In order for the plan to implemented, the patient must return to see the provider again and often wait up to 6 months before they return. This results in potentially sustained uncontrolled blood pressure.

The Role Of Social, Economic, And Physical Environmental Factors In Care Planning For Home Health Care Recipients, Elliane Irani Dec 2019

The Role Of Social, Economic, And Physical Environmental Factors In Care Planning For Home Health Care Recipients, Elliane Irani

Faculty Scholarship

Social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to patients’ recovery following hospitalization. However, little is known about how home health nurses make decisions based on their assessment of these factors. The purpose of the current study was to explore the nonclinical factors that home health nurses evaluate and describe how these factors influence care planning decisions. Semi-structured inter-views conducted with 20 visiting nurses from three home health agencies were analyzed using conven-tional content analysis. Three nonclinical factor themes emerged: Social Support, Home Environment and Neighborhood, and Finances and Insurance Barriers. Nurses’ assessments guided them to include family caregivers in the plan …

Practicing Leadership Skills Through Peer Mentoring And Teaching: The Lived Experience Of Bsn Students, Alicia Bright Dec 2019

Practicing Leadership Skills Through Peer Mentoring And Teaching: The Lived Experience Of Bsn Students, Alicia Bright

Nursing | Faculty Scholarship

Although leadership theory is introduced in baccalaureate nursing curriculum, opportunities to practice and develop leadership skills are limited for undergraduate nursing students. This study explores the experience of advanced nursing students who provided mentoring and tutoring to beginning nursing students. The experiences they describe are interpreted in light of literature on leadership education in undergraduate nursing schools, as well as that of peer mentoring and peer teaching. These advanced students described opportunities to practice and reflect on leadership skills and attributes. Peer mentoring and peer teaching programs may be an effective and efficient way of helping nursing students gain leadership …

A Simulation To Improve Nursing Students’ Understanding Of The Experience Of Middle Eastern Refugees, Ibtisam Matta

Honors Projects

A simulation was constructed with the aim of improving nursing students’ understanding of the needs of Middle Eastern refugees.

The research questions were: what are student nurses’ perceptions on the unique culture of the Middle Eastern refugee population after participating in a simulation of this populations’ experiences, and how will these influence the students’ interactions with this population in their nursing career?

Approval was granted from the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Internal Review Board (IRB) to conduct the research. Student nurses were recruited through GVSU Kirkhoff College of Nursing (KCON) Student Nursing Association (SNA); the event was one of …

Using Information Practices Of Nurses To Reform Information Literacy Instruction In Baccalaureate Nursing Programs, Anne R. Diekema, Betsy S. Hopkins, Brandon Patterson, Nena Schvaneveldt

Faculty Publications

Objective - Seeking information is a key element of evidence based practice and successful healthcare delivery. Significant literature exists on both the information seeking behaviour of professional nurses and information literacy teaching methods, but scarce evidence connects nurses’ information behaviour and environments with their education. This study sought to use data from nursing alumni to answer the following research questions: What are the current information practices of professional bachelor’s-prepared nurses? How do recently-graduated nurses suggest that their education could have better prepared them to find and evaluate information in the workplace?

Methods - The researchers conducted a descriptive study using …
