A Safety Mnemonic For Pediatric Oncology Patients: Knowledge, Confidence And Skills Accuracy During Simulation, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease [1]. Approximately 1.6 million Americans will receive treatment for a variety of cancers annually [2]. This increase in oncology nursing care opportunities highlights the need to ensure that nurses have the skills, knowledge, and tools that allow them to safely provide care. Because Undergraduate nursing education often does not provide in-depth coverage of the principles of safe oncology nursing care required for children or adults, this study addressed protocols used when caring for chemotherapy pediatric patients using a chemotherapy mnemonic. The purpose of …

Evaluating The Use Of Standardized Patients In Teaching Spiritual Care At The End Of Life, Margaret Fink, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley, Olivia Catolico, William Phillips Sep 2014

Evaluating The Use Of Standardized Patients In Teaching Spiritual Care At The End Of Life, Margaret Fink, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley, Olivia Catolico, William Phillips

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background Because of migration patterns to the United States over the past 250 years, there has always been cultural and religious diversity. Healthcare providers must have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to care for patients whose beliefs differ from their own, particularly during critical life events such as birth or death. An end of life care simulation experience for BSN students involving standardized patients (SPs) representing 3 well known religious groups was implemented. Method Fifty-four students participated in this quasi-experimental study comparing a treatment group (n=30) that experienced a simulation activity with a control group (n=24). Results/Conclusions The results …

By 2042, racial and ethnic minorities will account for 50% of America’s population (Mather & Pollard, 2009). About 10% of the countries counties have crossed the 50% mark or reached the “tipping point”, thus having a “majority-minority” status (Mather & Pollard, 2009). The demographic change continues to have a considerable impact on the healthcare sector, which is currently characterized by culturally diverse patients as well as healthcare practitioners (Hearnden, 2008). It is now critical to have an understanding of the cultural background and elements of communication to avoid medical and medication errors and attain successful treatment negotiations. Culture and religion …

An Investigation Of Cross-Cultural Communication In Nursing Education For The Reduction Of Medical Errors And The Improvement Of Clinical Outcomes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer Jul 2013

An Investigation Of Cross-Cultural Communication In Nursing Education For The Reduction Of Medical Errors And The Improvement Of Clinical Outcomes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Learning Objective 1: Critially evaluate how culturally sensitive communication can assist nurses in a variety of practice settings to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the potential of errors. Learning Objective 2: Describe how ethnography was used to discover culturally sensitive communication by capturing nurse's successful and unsuccessful communication patterns related to reducing errors and improving adherence. Purpose: This multi-disciplinary ethnographic study was conducted to capture the clinial experienes of RNs on their culturally sensitive communication and medical errors. Current literature describes how communication remains the number one influencing factor medical and medication errors. Researchers invesitgated how experienced RN's describe their …

Testing A Mnemonic On Response Skills During Simulated Codes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, William Phillips, Margaret Fink, Olivia Catolico, Natalie Sweeny May 2013

Testing A Mnemonic On Response Skills During Simulated Codes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, William Phillips, Margaret Fink, Olivia Catolico, Natalie Sweeny

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background Baccalaureate nursing students rarely have the opportunity to practice emergency response skills. Simulation gives students the ability to practice emergency procedures in an environment that is safe. Method Nursing students’ skills accuracy and confidence ratings were assessed before and after an instructional module that incorporated a mnemonic, named ABCD-COPIME, to improve emergency response techniques to a simulated code blue scenario. Seven nursing students completed 7 trials of responding to a code blue simulation. After each trial, skill accuracy was assessed with a skills checklist, and after Trials 1, 4, and 7, each student’s confidence was measured by self-report. A …

The Use Of Simulation For Pediatric Oncology Nursing Safety Principles: Ensuring Competent Practice Through The Use Of A Mnemonic, Chemotherapy Road Maps And Case-Based Learning, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background and Significance Caring for patients with cancer is becoming more common in acute and critical-care settings. According to the American Cancer Society (2010), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the nation. In any setting, nurses can encounter patients experiencing cancer care anywhere along the cancer care continuum. This includes recent diagnosis, induction chemotherapy, maintenance therapy, recovery, remission, or relapse and hospice care. Nurses need to be ready to respond to the unique needs of the cancer patient, whether the care is focused on adult or pediatric patients. Baccalaureate or associate degree nursing education does not typically …

Academic Safety During Nursing Simulation: Perceptions Of Nursing Students And Faculty, Barbara Ganley, Luanne Linnard-Palmer Jan 2012

Academic Safety During Nursing Simulation: Perceptions Of Nursing Students And Faculty, Barbara Ganley, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background Nursing simulation is said to be a safe learning environment. However, research and anecdotal information suggest it may be safe for patients but not academically safe for students. Academic safety is defined. Method Nursing students (n = 101) and faculty (n = 24) from schools in the San Francisco area completed online surveys to describe an academically safe learning environment. Results/Conclusions Faculty and students defined academically safe as supportive, and a climate where freedom to learn and grow is enjoyed by all.
