A shared mental model is a concept from high reliability environments, like aviation, to help teams develop collective understanding of how they will work together to safely accomplish their goals. Areas of high-risk health care like the operating room have adapted this concept to improve interdisciplinary teamwork and thus improve patient outcomes. Non-technical skills including communication, situational awareness, task management and leadership are employed to produce a functional shared mental model. Baccalaureate nursing students must develop strong clinical reasoning skills to make sound clinical judgments regarding patient care. The purpose of this Interpretive Descriptive qualitative study was to explore how students understand the evolution and application of their own clinical reasoning skills. Eight nursing students were interviewed about their perceptions regarding the use of clinical reasoning skills on a written, patient scenario based assignment. An overarching theme of Over Time emerged along with two themes: Understanding of Clinical Reasoning and Making Sense of the Assignment. Healthcare organizations and governments increasingly emphasize the importance of viewing patients and families as equal members of the care team, with the right to participate in decisions affecting their care. In order to support the imperatives of person-centred care, Quality of Life (QOL) assessments are utilized more as part of routine clinical care. QOL assessments involve the use of standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their health and quality of life from their own point of view.
