Background
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a major public health concern in the United States. Ria Health is a growing telehealth provider delivering AUD treatment through pharmacotherapy combined with behavioral health counseling.
Local Problem
Ria Health employs six California licensed nurse practitioners, but two of them have not yet met all the California provisions to practice independently without protocols. Ria Health has not put any standardized protocols in place.
Methods
This DNP project involved the creation of an evidence-based standardized protocol for AUD. The Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning questionnaire was disseminated to participating nurse practitioners to measure student …
Utilization Of The Nurse Practitioner Skillset In Partnership With The Medical Device Industry, Daniel C. Rowland
Utilization Of The Nurse Practitioner Skillset In Partnership With The Medical Device Industry, Daniel C. Rowland
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
BACKGROUND: Millions of nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA), and registered nurses (RN) are optimistic that their current employers will help them reach their full potential. One area that can add value to the hospital and empower employees to work to the full scope of their practice, and utilize the skillsets like that of an NP, is to train these providers to support medical device equipment in the operating room instead of relying on medical device representatives (MDRs) of medical device companies.
METHODS: Training NPs, PAs, or RNs how to support neurological medical device equipment will better utilize the skillset …
Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion For Nurse Practitioners, Alvin Joseph Abad
Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion For Nurse Practitioners, Alvin Joseph Abad
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem
Intravenous (IV) catheter insertion is a necessary skill in the emergency department (ED) for indications such as medications, fluids, and blood transfusions. Occasionally, patients present with difficult IV access (DIVA), requiring multiple insertion attempts and central venous catheter (CVC) placements. Due to the invasive nature of these procedures, patients can experience a great deal of pain and discomfort. Furthermore, although CVCs are necessary in critically ill patients that require hemodynamic monitoring or vasopressor infusions, they can cause several problems. For instance, central-line associated blood stream infections are some of the most common complications and result in increased costs and …
Improving Pediatric Oral-Systemic Health Through Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Training Intervention, Oksana Prodan
Improving Pediatric Oral-Systemic Health Through Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Training Intervention, Oksana Prodan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Introduction: In response to the prevalence of early childhood carries (ECC) in the United States, recommendations were established for pediatric primary care providers to routinely incorporate oral-systemic health promotion services into clinical practice. An interprofessional education project was developed between Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and dentistry students in San Francisco to assist trainees in the effective delivery of oral systemic health promotion services. Improving health promotion communication skills was identified as an area of need for both sets of learners. Therefore, the IPE activity was designed to incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) into the training along with pediatric oral …
Development Of A Nurse Practitioner First Assistant Orientation Program, Romoanetia Lofton
Development Of A Nurse Practitioner First Assistant Orientation Program, Romoanetia Lofton
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The demand for surgical services continues to increase, creating a strain in our healthcare system and causing increasing backlog hours for the operating room. Allowing nurse practitioners (NP) to function in an expanded role in the perioperative environment requires additional training beyond the generic NP program. With this additional training, the NP can function as a first assistant, providing delegated medical functions in the perioperative environment. An in-house NP registered nurse first assistant orientation program was developed based on the adult learning theory as a conceptual framework combined with the AORN perioperative standards as a foundation. The cost of using …
Evidence-Based Verbal De-Escalation Techniques For The Family Nurse Practitioner: Education And Simulation, Rachael K. Misitano
Evidence-Based Verbal De-Escalation Techniques For The Family Nurse Practitioner: Education And Simulation, Rachael K. Misitano
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Healthcare workers are 4 times more likely to be exposed to workplace violence than workers employed in private industry, with assault rates as high as 7.8 per 10,000 workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines workplace violence as “violent acts, including physical assaults, and or threats of assault, directed toward persons at work or on duty” (OSHA, 2015, p. 2). Verbal de-escalation techniques that assist with care of the agitated patient are not routinely taught to Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) throughout their years of advanced coursework, yet it is something they are likely to encounter …

Abstract
Rural communities are disproportionately underserved and have been identified as a priority population to improve health outcomes and access to care (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ], 2015). National organizations have recognized a deficit in primary care providers, recommended nurse practitioners (NPs) as a solution, and supported NP residency programs as a means to prepare and recruit qualified practitioners into communities (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010; The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act [PPACA], 2010). However, there are only three primary care NP residency programs in rural California (National Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Training Consortium [NNPRFTC], 2015). …
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (Mbsr) In Reducing Stress In Nursing Students: An Integrative Review And Toolkit, Donna J. Petko
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (Mbsr) In Reducing Stress In Nursing Students: An Integrative Review And Toolkit, Donna J. Petko
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Across the country, nursing students are experiencing alarming amounts of stress. While stress is a common phenomenon, it has been shown to negatively impact nursing student performance and general health. One solution to this issue is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). Reported effects of MBSR include stress reduction; mindfulness; improvements in self-esteem; increase in general health; a decrease in anxiety; and an increase in empathy. Because MBSR is not widely included in nursing curricula, students are not learning stress reduction techniques needed to manage daily stress. Purpose: To address this gap, a DNP project was implemented at a university site. …

Fnp Led Mobile Health Services For The Homeless Population, Tenzin D. Lama
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
A small percentage of the U.S. population uses the greatest portion of the healthcare services. Homeless people are often such a group of “super-utilizers” of the healthcare system. Due to multiple medical and psychosocial conditions, people experiencing homelessness face numerous barriers to accessing healthcare, thus leading increased utilization of hospitals and emergency departments (EDs) services. Many of these events are preventable through improved primary care interventions. The literature on Respite/Recuperative Care, Transitional Care, and Mobile Health interventions have shown effectiveness in providing safe and quality care to homeless individuals during the critical transitional period post hospital discharge while also reducing …

Improving The Implementation Of The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Acnp) Role: Development Of Acnp Role Implementation Guidelines, Megan Elizabeth Liego
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
With the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Value Based Purchasing (VBP) initiative, hospitals and the health System have rolled out a strategic goals of focusing on meeting the VBP objectives and standardizing care within their hospitals. To help meet these goals and improve patient care, many hospitals have looked toward the implementation of the acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) role in the hospital setting. There is a lack of guidelines, though, on how to implement the ACNP role. This has led to several barriers, which have created variation in practice and outcomes across …
