Purpose: Preventing infection and its spread is paramount in any healthcare setting. This can be challenging in the long term care setting since the regulations governing the use of Transmission Based Precautions in this setting differ from acute care hospitals. State and federal regulations guiding long term care institutions require that patients receive high quality nursing and medical services that is patient-centered while concurrently viewing the facility as the “patient’s home.” Providing high quality services while maintaining a home like quality creates competing expectations. …

Purpose Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are a frequently performed test in the emergency department (ED). Despite an increased awareness of infection prevention, there is currently no standard policy on the routine cleaning of EKG machines at The University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC). Background: A Wisconsin Population Health study indicates that Orleans County Vermont ranks thirteenth out of fourteen Counties in health outcomes and socioeconomic risk factors, and fourteenth in quality of life (Foundation, 2018). Research in the United States shows that eight to fifteen percent of children live with a parent with a diagnosis of depression, and depression has been associated with a two to three times greater risk for inflicting physical abuse, neglect, and psychological aggression on a child (Sampson, Duron, Mauldin, Kao, & Davidson, 2017).
