Maternal mortality rates in the United States have been a growing concern over the past decade, with rates continuing to climb as recent studies have been published. A cesarean section (CS) is a vital maternal care intervention when necessary; however, the surgical procedure places childbearing women at direct risk for infection, hemorrhage, thromboembolism, injury to bladder or bowel, post-surgical pain, and complications from anesthesia. The risk of mortality associated with CS is four to five times more likely compared to vaginal delivery. Severe nursing shortages, high patient volumes, and patients with complex pregnancy related health concerns create barriers to the provision of continuous labor support (CLS) by labor and delivery (L&D) nurses. The cesarean section (C-section) rate has risen dramatically in the past several decades both in the United States and throughout the world. Domestically, the C-section rate has risen from 4.5% in 1965 to 32.2% in 2014 (National Partnership for Women & Families [NPWF], 2016a). Worldwide, roughly 19% of births occur via C-Section (Betrán et al., 2016). Concurrently, the induction rate has also increased, doubling in the United States between 1990 – 1998 (Davey & King, 2016).
