Abstract
Background: The non-treatment of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in adult oncology patients on treatment is a clinical practice issue identified globally and at the local Hematology and Oncology Clinic. Despite the growing evidence supporting physical activity to address CRF, this problem remains prominent. Objective: An 8-week home-based walking program was implemented at the local clinic to address this problem. This project aimed to increase the prevalence of managing CRF and reduce the severity of CRF. Methods: With the provider's recommendation, adult oncology patients on active treatment at the Hematology and Oncology Clinic registered for the program in …

Effects Of A Home-Based Exercise Program On Perception Of Illness And Adaptation In Heart Failure Patients, Robin Faust Harris

Patients experience decreased functional capacity from chronic symptoms associated with heart failure. Exercise increases activity tolerance and quality of life in heart failure patients. Physiologic responses to exercise in heart failure patients have been well-documented. In contrast, the effects of exercise on an individual’s perception of degree of disability due to chronic illness and their adaptive responses to heart failure have not been studied. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the effects of a 12-week home-based combined aerobic and resistance training exercise intervention on an individual’s perception of degree of disability and adaptive responses to chronic …

Persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are not only at risk because of disabling disease symptoms but because necessary medications create health risks associated with high rates of obesity. Despite the well-known benefits of exercise, persons with SSDs rarely adhere to such regimens; few interventions to motivate exercise behavior have been tested in this group.
The purpose of this study is to examine effects of the Walk, Address sensations, Learn about exercise, Cue exercise behavior for persons with SSDs (WALC-S) motivational intervention upon exercise behavior. We will recruit a total of eighty outpatients 18–68 years, meeting these criteria: 1) chart …

The purpose of this study was to determine what relationship exists among physical activity levels and viral load and CD4+ cell count in HIV-infected individuals. Increased viral load is associated with disease progression and symptom severity. A convenience sample of 66 male and female subjects between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age (mean 399/8) was recruited from a hospital-based HIV/AIDS clinic. Components of PA were assessed for three continuous days using a mini-motion logger wrist actigraph. These components included mean PA level, and PA index and acceleration index. Pearson’s correlational analysis was used to test the strength …
