The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that over two million workers are victims of workplace violence (WPV) (Papa, 2013). Registered nurses are subjected to high risk for workplace violence from patients and visitors, with 25.5% reporting at least one victimization incident (Gillespie et al., 2013). Research indicates that WPV has a significant impact on nurses' quality of working life, job satisfaction levels, turnover rates and has also been shown to negatively impact efficiency and productivity (Gacki-Smith et al., 2009). Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that seeks to ensure patients receive medical care that is consistent with their values and preferences. The process has proven benefits for patients and their loved ones but is under-utilized in clinical practice. Nurses are capable of successfully supporting patients through ACP; however, they encounter barriers that prevent their engagement in the process. These barriers include a lack of knowledge regarding ACP, poor understanding of their role in the process, and a lack of confidence to embrace the practice.

Introduction Nurse handoff reporting is a crucial time for communication exchange in healthcare settings. During the handoff report, patient information is exchanged between senders and receivers transferring responsibility for care with the main purpose of providing accurate and timely information about the patient. Heart failure is a chronic disease in which a weakened heart is no longer able to deliver adequate blood flow to supply the body with needed oxygen and nutrients. Heart failure is the most common reason for hospitalization in the United States for patients age 65 and over, accounting for over 1,000,000 hospital admissions annually. Due to the chronic nature of this debilitating condition and associated symptoms, patients discharged from the hospital with a diagnosis of heart failure are at high risk for readmission. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect simulation training has on an OB nurse's ability to correctly triage pregnant patients. Registered Nurses (RNs) working in OB triage must be able to correctly and expediently identify the care a pregnant patient needs. OB triage nurses are trained to recognize pregnancy related issues that commonly present during the months leading up to delivery.
