The Suitability Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Chronic Hepatitis C, Lynn Koerbel, Donna Zucker
The Suitability Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Chronic Hepatitis C, Lynn Koerbel, Donna Zucker
Donna M. Zucker
As incidence of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in the United States increases, management of physical and psychological symptoms over the long term becomes crucial. Research has shown meditation to be a valuable tool in reducing such symptoms for various chronic illnesses. In particular, the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program offers curriculum that has been show to influence both physiology and perception of disease states. Although there has been not direct research to date on the effectiveness of the MBSR program for CHC, several studies have shown significant findings affecting other chronic conditions including heart disease, fibromyalgia and HIV. The purpose …

Nurses play a vital role in providing health care to children with developmental disability (DD) throughout the United States. Unfortunately, most nurses continue to report that they receive little or no clinical education in the area of DDs. In response to this need, a core development team consisting of nurse practitioners and nursing faculty from three universities, one physician assistant faculty, parents of children with DD, and educational specialists developed two multimedia (virtual patient) pediatric instructional modules in CD-ROM format—one involving a child with Down syndrome, and the other involving an infant born at 26 weeks' gestation. Participants were required …

Implementing Supportive Strategies To Retain Nurse Educators, Kathleen Halcomb, Amy Gregg, Bridget Roberts

The nurse educator shortage directly affects the nursing shortage. To adequately prepare future nurses, academia needs to retain qualified nurse educators. Many factors affect the nurse educator shortage, including retirement and competition for qualified nursing educators with clinics and the privatesector, as well as dissatisfaction with the multiple stressors and expectations in the academic setting. Academia should implement supportive strategies to aid in the retention of nurse educators.

Experiences Of Expert Nurses In Caring For Patients With Postoperative Pain, Jennifer Richards, Ann Hubbert
Ann Hubbert
Despite enormous technologic advances and substantial research in the area of pain management in recent years, numerous studies indicate that postoperative pain is not relieved in most patients. Nurses are the health care professionals who spend the most time with patients in pain. Despite this, there is a lack of research that has sought to understand the experiences of nurses, the professionals most closely tied to this issue. The purpose of this pilot qualitative study was to learn how expert nurses assess, manage, and care for patients with postoperative pain. A phenomenologic mode of inquiry was used to interview three …

Health experts worldwide recognize breastmilk as the superior infant food. Recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization (WHO) identify exclusive breastfeeding for the first half-year of life and continuation of breastfeeding into toddlerhood as offering maximum protection from illness, providing a substrate for immunological protection. Data from developed countries identify increasing morbidity and mortality rates for infants who have never received breastmilk in life and demonstrate that infants benefit from exclusive breastfeeding, especially, in areas of severe poverty. Preterm infants, most at risk for morbidity and mortality in developing countries, are identified as needing their …
