In Adult Patients Receiving Wound Care, What Is The Effect Of Wound Care Given Using Clean Technique, Compared To Wound Care Given Using Sterile Technique On Efficient Wound Healing Process Without Complications?, Lily Gamble, Madison Taylor

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

We chose to research the effect of wound care given using clean technique compared to sterile technique. According to the US Center for Disease Control, nearly 1.7 million patients suffer from hospital-acquired infections and more than 98,000 of these patients die every year (Haque, et al., 2018). Due to this frightening statistic, we wanted to further understand and discover if using a certain technique when caring for wounds plays a major role in preventing complications, such as infections. We chose our topic based on our learning experiences in clinical and the classroom setting. We then found credible sources from medical …

The Impact Of Nursing Hand Off Reports, Bobbie Umberger, Selena Carrera

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

We will be evaluating and comparing different types of nursing handoff reports, such as verbal versus bedside. We researched different research articles and studies that compared bedside handoff reports to verbal handoff reports. These studies analyzed the effect on patients, such as safety and satisfaction, from the type of handoff report. In our research, we compared the advantages and disadvantages of verbal and bedside reports and found strategies to improve handover reports. From this information it was concluded that the bedside report is more effective than a verbal report for the patient and nurse.

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The COVID19 pandemic has generated rumors and conspiracy theories: -Origin of the virus, its modes of transmission, the options for preventing and treating it, and the actions governments have taken (Vraga & Jacobsen, 2020). Which is more effective: cloth face masks or neck gaiters. Gaiter masks fit very loosely around the mouth and nose. According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, your mask should fully cover your nose and chin: preventing breathing in any droplets (Schive, 2020). Masks need to be tightly woven; you cannot see the individual fibers when holding it up to the light (Schive, 2020). Masks should be …

Do Adults With Bacterial Infections Develop Less Of An Antibiotic Resistance With Iv Antibiotics Than With Oral Antibiotics After A Full Course Of Treatment?, Navvy Stevens, Taylor-Erin Evitts

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

This study was conducted in order to discover if patients develop less of an antibiotic resistance when going through intravenous antibiotics, compared to using oral antibiotics. This concept was created due to the fact that many people that are prescribed oral antibiotics, do not finish the entire prescribed amount. When this occurs, it gives the bacteria that the antibiotics were trying to get rid of, have the chance to adapt and become resistant to the particular antibiotic. By discovering the percentage of people who were prescribed antibiotics that never finished a round of them, it aids in narrowing down what …

2020 Virtual Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Urinary catheters are one of the most often utilized invasive devices used in the hospital. “15–25% of all hospitalized patients are catheterized at some time during their hospital stay” (Kranz, Schmidt, Wagenlehner, & Schneidewind, 2020, p.2). These devices have a purpose but they come with consequences, some unavoidable. The aim of this research is to use the available evidence of catheterization to discover which option, an indwelling urinary catheter or an external catheter device, provides better outcomes by posing the least amount of risks to the male patient. At the conclusion of this study, the hope is to have an …

Nurs 360: For Surgical Incisions, Does The Use Of Hydrocolloid Dressings Reduce The Risk Of Infection Compared With Silver Dressings?, Bailey Dallas, Searra Richardson

2020 Virtual Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Surgical incisions are cuts in the skin and soft tissue created to facilitate an operation or procedure. Afterwards, these cuts must be covered with a wound dressing to prevent infection from occurring. Hydrocolloid dressings and silver dressings are commonly used for surgical incisions. Hydrocolloid dressings are gel-like that stick to the wound to provide a moist, healing environment. Silver dressings release silver into the wound to provide an antimicrobial effect. The question is, based on evidence-based practice and nursing research, which dressing provides the best environment to prevent infection and promote optimum healing for surgical wounds. For our research, we …

Nurs 360: For Females, Does The Use Of External Catheters Reduce The Risk Of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections Compared With Women Who Use Indwelling Foley Catheters?, Kalie Creasy, Lauren Richardson

2020 Virtual Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are among one of the highest hospital-acquired infections. These infections are most commonly associated with the use of indwelling Foley catheters. The indwelling Foley catheter is placed through the urethra and can remain inserted for prolonged periods of time. This increases the risk for build-up of bacteria, which leads to the urinary tract infection. Due to the increased risk of infection, the external female catheter has now become an alternative. This device is placed externally, between the labia majora, and is changed every eight to twelve hours. This alternative has tremendously decreased the associated risk of …

In times of crisis, many nurses are required to complete mandatory overtime in order to assure that there are enough nurses for the correct nurse-to-patient ratio. This can lead to a significant increase in burnout for nurses who might already be experiencing fatigue related to their position (Dyrbye, West, Johnson, & Cipriano, 2020). The purpose of this research is to evaluate current evidence on whether nurses who are required to participate in mandatory overtime are as successful and functional in patient care as the nurses who are not required.

There is a variety of genitourinary infection which include but are not limited to catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). These infections are often considered nosocomial because they are commonly contracted in a healthcare environment like hospitals. “The most important risk factor for developing a catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI) is prolonged use of the urinary catheter” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015a, para 1). CAUTIs can lead to increased length of hospital stay, additional treatments for the infection, side effects, and increased patient discomfort (Kelechi, Kelechi, & Qanungo, 2017). Due to this the use of an external female catheter or …

2020 Virtual Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The increase in heart disease in this country has created the need for more treatment options for out-of hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA). Therapeutic hypothermia, also referred to as code ice, involves the cooling of a patient’s body temperature to around thirty-two degrees Celsius, and it has become a standard of care for patients who are resuscitated after a OOHCA. When these patients experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital there is a risk for decreased brain function. This decrease in brain function can lead to patient being declared brain dead and placed on a ventilator. However, some research indicates that …

Music therapy has been studied considerably in the last decade and analysts have successfully discovered that it can be a useful treatment for patients with depression. Specifically, researchers have found that this therapy has overall increased patient outcomes for both the elderly and end- of-life care patients. Depression medications are beneficial, but bring along many side effects. Music therapy has been found to increase patients’ sense of well-being, bring about excitement and motivation, and nevertheless provide greater socialization opportunities. Integrating music therapy into regular hospital treatment, nursing home, and hospice settings can overall increase patient outcomes and improve the negative …

Going to the hospital is very stressful but it can be almost impossible for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These children are at a larger risk for being admitted to the hospital because of periodic and chronic health complications and possible self harm or aggressive behaviors. Many hospitals are making strides to improve these children’s hospital experiences. Interventions include improving training and finding ways to make the environment sensory friendly. Implementing these tactics into the future can greatly improve patient outcome and encourage people with ASD to come back to healthcare environment when needed and not be as afraid.

We decided to conduct research in an effort to answer our question, “Are spacer devices the most effective treatment option for patients with asthma?”. We recognized that there has been debate about whether or not the standard prescribed metered-dose inhalers effectively administer medication to a patient's lungs due to the need for hand-breath coordination. Therefore, we wanted to discover if attaching spacer devices onto inhalers would deliver medication more thoroughly by eliminating this need as well as the overall effectiveness of this device when compared to other treatment options. We reviewed recent and relevant literature pertaining to this question to …
