This thesis project reviews how nursing care, specifically that of nursing assistance, impacts patient satisfaction. Care provided to patients during hospitalization is scored by post-discharge surveys. For this project, the HCAHP survey is specifically referred to and discussed. The survey data obtained from the HCAHP survey is available to the public for review. This data can affect the population's outlook on healthcare organizations. Research has found that care provided by nursing assistants has an impact on the satisfaction of patients. Research in the area of improving patient satisfaction is lacking in data and tools for improvement.

Bedside reporting can directly correlate with preventing errors in the healthcare setting. The three main errors that occur are falls, medication errors, and sentinel events. These errors have a vast number of different outcomes, even resulting in death in some cases. An acute care observation unit provides care for patients admitted via Emergency Center (EC) or direct admission from a healthcare provider’s office who do not yet require inpatient status. The goal length of stay (LOS) for these patients should be less than or equal to 24-48 hours. This project is being developed for a 22-bed observation unit in the Southeastern United States to decrease current LOS hours. Currently, the goal LOS for this unit is 24 hours, not to exceed 48 hours, and for patients admitted with a chest pain diagnosis, no longer than 19 hours. A plan to expand …

Due to the decreased staff and patient satisfaction on one post-operative unit, the author has developed a project plan to establish a unit specific Self Governance (SG) committee to improve staff and patient satisfaction. One SG committee and two councils will be formed giving all staff the opportunity to be a voice for change on their unit. The committee is focused on building and maintaining each council. Nurses often experience compassion fatigue and burnout when working in stressful environments. Nurses tend to put the needs of their patients above their own needs. It is imperative for the work environment to promote relaxation and restoration, to avert compassion fatigue and nursing burnout. All employees of the project director’s organization were encouraged to attend Caring for the Caregiver Day, a hospital-sponsored event which provided education and promoted self-help interventions aimed to decrease compassion fatigue and burnout. Late referrals to hospice can result in less time for the hospice team to perform assessments, establish relationships, and initiate goals. This secondary analysis addresses the effects of the length of stay of a hospice patient and the level of satisfaction reported by their caregivers after the passing of their loved one. The hypothesis of the study is that there is a direct relationship between a family's perception of the value of hospice and the length of stay of their terminally ill loved one.
