Nurse incivility is currently prevalent in the nursing workplace. Incivility is described in the form of disrespectful attitudes and behaviors. Ethnic values may be ignored by those committing uncivil behaviors. Victims of incivility may not report uncivil incidents. Organizations and other stakeholders may discover difficulty in responding or exploring causative incivility behavior. Workplace incivility may be displayed as unsafe actions, nurse management errors, and staff dissatisfaction. Nursing staff may decide on resigning positions because of workplace incivility. Healthy, civil, caring workplace environments are imperative to patient and staff well-being.

The term workplace incivility is often replaced interchangeably with workplace bullying, horizontal/lateral violence, psychosocial harassment, intimidating behavior, and/or aggression (micro/macro). Workplace incivility in nursing has lasting effects on the profession through worsening the nursing shortage, contributing to low morale, negative working environments, safety issues for staff and patients, stress-related health problems, absenteeism, and decreased quality of patient care. Incivility can be from a variety of sources including: Nurse managers, clinical team leads, unit coordinators, physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Buy-in by nursing executive leadership and evidence-based education for nurses is mandatory to address organizational incivility.

Students and their instructors are often ill equipped to deal with academic incivility and their lack of ability to handle such behaviors has proven detrimental to the future of the nursing profession. Academic incivility is a growing concern on college campuses ranging from rude behaviors, offensive language, and cheating, to hostile violent behaviors. A quantitative descriptive design was used to compare the awareness of perceptions regarding academic incivility among fourth semester nursing students currently enrolled in a private, Christian, Baptist-related university, and a rural public community college. The prevalence of horizontal violence in nursing has been well documented in the past 20 years. Recently the focus of the literature has been on developing strategies to prevent horizontal violence from occurring. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to ascertain how Registered Nurses at one rural North Carolina hospital experienced and perceived horizontal violence. A "zero" tolerance policy was in place at the time of the study. The Nursing 2011 horizontal violence survey was used to examine a convenience sample of 40 nurses in this facility.
