Constipation is a prevalent symptom in the hospice population, negatively effecting quality of life for patients. Constipation is frequently overlooked, undiagnosed, and untreated by healthcare providers. The role of the hospice nurse is ideal for managing the symptom of constipation with traditional and alternative therapies. Literature review reveals very limited research on constipation and hospice patients, and alternative therapies for constipation. Nurses' perceptions of barriers may influence the type of pain control options offered to women in labor. While effective in relieving low-back pain associated with labor, nurses rarely utilize intradermal sterile water injections for women during labor. Using the Nurses' Perceptions of the Use of Intradermal Sterile Water Injections in Labor survey, labor nurses identified barriers to offering intradermal sterile water injections during labor. Individual and institutional characteristics were associated with higher perceived barriers. The purpose of this study is to answer the following question: Does a registered nurses department, medical-surgical versus emergency department, change the amount of workplace violence they may experience? To accomplish this, a cross sectional descriptive study using an anonymous web-based Workplace Violence questionnaire survey by Wolters Kluwer Health was used to collect data from nurses working on medical-surgical units and in the emergency department at the facility. The findings indicate more physical violence with more frequent or occasional occurrences in emergency departments. The medical-surgical nurses reported more intimidation or emotional violence and never experience workplace violence.

The purpose of this comparative experimental project was to compare the impact of simulation-based learning experiences to traditional clinical rotations on critical thinking acquisition of associate nursing students within a maternal-child course. Innovative pedagogies have been integrated in nursing programs to augment inadequate clinical placement and instructor availabilities. A longitudinal convenience sample of 45 second year associate level nursing students enrolled in a maternal-child course was utilized. Four experimental groups, 24 students were exposed to an eight-hour simulation-based learning experience in place of one clinical rotation. A convenience sample of 56 second-year associate degree nursing students enrolled in an Adult Medical-Surgical II nursing course and experiential laboratory course participated in this project. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a brief computer-based learning module on nurses' self-efficacy regarding tobacco cessation counseling. Twelve registered nurses practicing in an acute care hospital system participated in the one-group pretest-posttest study. At registration, participants completed a demographical tool and the Modified "5 A's" Training Program Survey. The Modified "5 A's" Training Program Survey was completed again immediately after the training program. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the demographic data. This project examined if transformational nurse managers were perceived by their nursing staff as more effective leaders than transactional or passive/avoidant leaders using the Transformational Theory of Leadership through administration of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Form 5X) to nurse unit managers and staff nurses. 80 staff nurses and seven unit nurse managers participated in the study. The transition from a student nurse to a registered nurse poses a difficult transition for some. Benner's model, Novice to Expert, details the transition in stages. It is important for hospital educators and administrators to understand Benner's stages and model their orientation programs appropriately. The Revised Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey was used to query new nurses (≤ 2 years experience) and their preceptors. Results indicate that new nurses feel uncomfortable performing certain skills, communicating with doctors, and lack support after their orientation period. The results support a change in the orientation process and preceptor education.
