Nurse Practitioners' Adjustment To The Hospitalist Position: A Grounded Theory Study, Donna Tanzi

Hospital based medicine is the fastest growing medical specialty in the United States. While most hospitalists are internal medicine residency graduates, most of these new internal medicine medical graduates are choosing not to enter hospital medicine, resulting in a growing hospitalist workforce shortage. To fill this staffing gap, nurse practitioners (NPs), some with no previous NP experience, are assuming hospitalist positions. As more NPs assume hospitalist positions, they face challenges adapting to the prevailing physician-based hospitalist model, such as attaining requisite medical knowledge and skills and establishing credibility and rapport with other care team members.
