Cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and dementia are three disease processes that have been directly linked to estrogen deficiency. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for all postmenopausal women, including those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Osteoporosis and dementia are disease processes that profoundly affect the quality of life for postmenopausal women. Currently, 34% of women in the general population receive hormone replacement therapy (HRT), while only 10% of women with ESRD receive this therapy. Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness that is common among the nursing home population. Treatment for Alzheimer's disease is usually palliative and consists of using psychotropic medications to control aggressive and agitated behaviors exhibited by its victims. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify behaviors exhibited by Alzheimer's disease patients before and after receiving psychotropic medications. Johnson's Behavioral System Model was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Patients requiring medical care frequently experience increased levels of anxiety. This increase in anxiety may be attributed to fear of the medical examination, procedures to be performed, or the findings. Music therapy was tested as a possible intervention to reduce anxiety. The focus of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the influence of music therapy on adult patients in an outpatient clinic. The purpose of this research study was to correlate a client's sense of powerlessness with his compliance to a health care regime. From a population of patients of a family physician in a rural county in Northeast Mississippi, a sample of 30 individuals were given the Health Locus of Control tool and the Compliance tool. Of these 30, 23 met the qualifications and were included in the study.
