Infection Risk Along U.S. Highways? The Case Of A ‘Truckchaser’ Cruising For Truckers, Mona Shattell, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Richard Rothenberg, Rose Weitz, John Smith
Richard Rothenberg
This article explores potential infection risks linked with trucker cruising along U.S. highways. Specifically, the article delineates the settings and social organization of trucker cruising, examines the structure of sex partnerships of truckers and cruisers, and delves into the unique database of one truckchaser who recorded 4,162 sex interactions with 2,499 different truckers during a 13-year period. Concurrent sexual partnerships of bisexual and particularly straight-identified truckers hold increased potential for amplifying infection risk as they enable pathogens to operate as bridges along disparate geographies, demographies, and epidemiologies.

Information Placed In Trust: Older Gay Men And Social Workers On Talking About Sexual Identity In Aged Care, Mark Hughes
Professor Mark Hughes
As more men who openly identify as gay approach older age, it is important for health and aged care professionals to consider the appropriateness of talking with these men about their sexual identity. This paper reports findings from a pilot study that examined how sexual identity should be acknowledged in aged care practice. The paper draws on qualitative data from two focus groups; one with older gay men and one with social workers. An analysis of the themes that overlapped the two groups highlighted the extent to which participants thought sexual identity should be discussed openly, the value placed on …

Occupational Stressors And The Mental Health Of Truckers. Issues In Mental Health Nursing, Mona Shattell, Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Sevil Sönmez, Mary Griffin
Mona Shattell
Trucking has been classified as one of the highest-risk occupations in the United States.
Occupational stress is even greater for long-haul truckers who are away from home, family, friends, and other support networks for several days or weeks at a time. Occupational stressors and the mental health of truckers was studied using data collected as part of a large multisite ethnoepidemiological study of trucker networks. Findings from the current study show that truckers face many occupational stressors including constant time pressures, social isolation, disrespectful treatment from others, driving hazards such as weather changes, traffic, and road conditions, and violence or …

Diabetes Self-Management In The Migrant Latino Population, Dawn Weiler, Janice D. Crist
Dawn Weiler
This article will present an in-depth exploration and synthesis of current literature that informs nursing knowledge of diabetes self-management for the migrant Latino population. Extensive research in diabetes care has been conducted, however, there is a significant knowledge gap related to the factors that influence the achievement of glycemic control and self-management practices of the Latino population. Based on well-documented disparities in complications and health outcomes among Latinos when compared with White Americans, there is sufficient evidence to question whether traditional White beliefs about self-management are successful or appropriate for the Latino population in general and migrants specifically. Traditional models …

Controle De Infecção Em Clínicas De Cirurgia Plástica / Infection's Control In Plastic Surgery Clinics, Everton Fernando Alves
Everton Fernando Alves

Office Nurse Educators: Improving Diabetes Self-Management For The Latino Population In The Clinic Setting, Dawn Weiler, Laura Tirrell
Dawn Weiler
Diabetes patients who understand their disease and how to manage it can achieve a lower complication rate. The American Diabetes Association recommends that patients receive self-management education and that patients' skills and knowledge be reassessed annually. The Healthy People 2010 objectives include a goal of at least 60% of diabetes patients receiving diabetes education. However, to date overall, far fewer (20%–50%) obtain comprehensive diabetes education and skills development to effectively implement self-management techniques. Low-income Latino patients generally fare even worse. This article describes a successful method to address this problem: the development and evaluation of an in-house diabetes education program, …

Concierge Medicine: The Perfect Storm? Implications For Nurse Practitioners
Concierge Medicine: The Perfect Storm? Implications For Nurse Practitioners
Linda A. Treiber
This article addresses a recent change in the health care delivery system: the concierge medical practice, where doctors provide an array of special services by limiting practice to a small number of patients willing to pay a membership fee. The purpose of this article is to document this trend and to situate it within the health care system. Although beneficial for patients who can afford it, concierge medicine leads to increasing health care inequalities and disparities in the United States. The implications for nurse practitioners include caring for a larger and sicker population of underserved patients.

Student & Faculty Satisfaction With A Pedagogical Framework, Vincent L. Salyers, Lorraine Carter, Penelope Barrett, Lynda Williams
Dr. Vincent L Salyers
Most schools of nursing utilize technology to deliver courses, and entire curricula, through a combination of face to face (f2f), web-enhanced, and fully online strategies. Challenges associated with course delivery may include geographic and technological barriers, lack of instructional design support, inconsistent, inadequate or unreliable support infrastructure, and varying degrees of faculty and student experiences with learning management systems. The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate student and faculty satisfaction with two courses structured using a pedagogical framework; identify advantages and disadvantages of the courses; and identify instructional design recommendations for implementation of the framework. Based on results …

An Intervention To Prevent Symptoms Associated With Hepatitis C: A Pilot Study, Donna M. Zucker
Donna M. Zucker
The objectives of this study were to (a) pilot test instruments measuring fatigue and quality of life (QOL); (b) pilot test an exercise intervention; and (c) estimate the effect size of this intervention relative to completion of combination therapy, fatigue, QOL, and walking distance in 20 patients with chronic hepatitis C about to begin interferon alpha and ribavirin treatment. Alpha reliabilities for both the Schwartz Cancer Fatigue Scale and Hepatitis Quality of Life Questionnaire were moderately high. Power analyses of all outcome measures indicated a small effect size and sample size estimate of 30–40 per group to achieve power of …
