Using Patient Safety Principles To Prevent Patient Harm, Octavia Reed Wynn

While healthcare is intended to promote and restore optimal health and quality of life, it has been realized that patients often experience unintended harm while consuming healthcare services. In a project conducted in a 12-bed intensive care unit, nurses completed a pre-survey to identify a baseline understanding of patient safety principles. They then completed online educational modules designed to teach patient safety principles including patient and family centered healthcare, systems safety, and culture of safety. Following the educational intervention, a postsurvey to assess for increased understanding was administered.
