Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas Arthur Hagerty Sep 2015

Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas Arthur Hagerty

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Patients' experiences in hospitals are important indicators of quality. Patients' opinions about their experiences in hospitals are significantly associated with their opinions of those hospitals' nursing services. Nurses in the US have traditionally focused on patients' experiences, and Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations is early evidence of that focus. This study tested Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations in nursing using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on data from 12,436 patient experience surveys. Two hypotheses were supported: (a) patient experience data (i.e. responses on the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems - Hospital [HCAHPS] survey) collected from patients in …

Development Of Instructional Competencies For Assessing And Managing Suicide Risk For Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Abigail Kotowski May 2015

Development Of Instructional Competencies For Assessing And Managing Suicide Risk For Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Abigail Kotowski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Suicide is a major health problem and a leading cause of death throughout the world. Reforming health professional education has been identified as a primary goal for suicide prevention, and although nursing leadership is involved in this reform, nurses frequently lack the competence to care for patients in suicidal crisis. An identified gap in baccalaureate nursing education is instructional competencies for assessing and managing suicide risk. Instructional competencies are targeted components of knowledge, attitudes, and skills that nursing students need to know in order to assess and manage patients expressing suicidal ideation. This study aimed to develop a set of …

The Lived Experience Of Family Nurse Practitioners Performing Sexual Health Assessments, Madeleine Mary Lloyd May 2015

The Lived Experience Of Family Nurse Practitioners Performing Sexual Health Assessments, Madeleine Mary Lloyd

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Sexuality incorporates a multitude of feelings including beliefs, fantasies, and aspects of pleasure, intimacy, and reproduction. In addition, sexuality involves rights to gender identity and role, sexual acts and orientation. Sexual and reproductive health and rights is a global health, development, and human rights priority. Universal access to sexual and reproductive health is essential. Negative sexual health outcomes are increasing in the United States and sexuality is often a neglected area for health providers including nurses. With an increasing share of the primary care services nationally, family nurse practitioners (FNPs) have the means to provide quality sexual health care across …

Development And Validation Of A Bangladeshi Pediatric Silhouette Scale (Bpss), Ana Mola

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

There is no culturally congruent children's silhouette scale to understand how Bangladeshi mothers perceive their children's body sizes and weight categories. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an ethnic congruent Bangladeshi Pediatric Silhouette Scale (BPSS) and a facial feature scale to assess the mothers' perceptions of their children's body sizes, weight categories and facial features. The study methodology was a quantitative, descriptive design with scale content validation. The sample was comprised of 29 Bangladeshis mothers ages 25-40 and their four-five year old children living in London, England and New York City. The Mola Facetool analyses revealed …

Content Analysis Of Applied Learning From High Fidelity Patient Simulation Orientation To Critical Care, Patricia M. Span May 2015

Content Analysis Of Applied Learning From High Fidelity Patient Simulation Orientation To Critical Care, Patricia M. Span

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that over 98,000 deaths occur in hospitals from medical errors in the United States. In a follow-up IOM report, it was noted that nurses have a direct impact on patient morbidity and mortality and are often the last line of defense for patient safety. The challenge for nurse educators in hospitals is to ensure that as newly licensed nurses enter the workforce, orientation outcomes reflect acquisition of knowledge and skills, which are applied in practice. When newly licensed registered nurses are hired into critical care units, this puts them in a position where they …

Background: This programme of research addressed shortcomings in the care of three groups of older patients: patients discharged from acute medical units (AMUs), patients with dementia and delirium admitted to general hospitals, and care home residents.

Methods: In the AMU workstream we undertook literature reviews, performed a cohort study of older people discharged from AMU (Acute Medical Unit Outcome Study; AMOS), developed an intervention (interface geriatricians) and evaluated the intervention in a randomised controlled trial (Acute Medical Unit Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Intervention Study; AMIGOS). In the second workstream we undertook a cohort study of older people with mental health problems …

Publications and Research

This Indonesian study evaluates associations between near-miss status/death with maternal demographic, health care characteristics, and obstetrical complications, comparing results using retrospective and prospective data. The main outcome measures were obstetric conditions and socio-economic factors to predict near-miss/death. We abstracted all obstetric admissions (1,358 retrospective and 1,240 prospective) from two district hospitals in East Java, Indonesia between 4/1/2009 and 5/15/2010. Prospective data added socio-economic status, access to care and referral patterns. Reduced logistic models were constructed, and multivariate analyses used to assess association of risk variables to outcome. Using multivariate analysis, variables associated with risk of near-miss/death include postpartum hemorrhage (retrospective …

Burnout: Absence Of Binding Diagnostic Criteria Hampers Prevalence Estimates, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2015

Burnout: Absence Of Binding Diagnostic Criteria Hampers Prevalence Estimates, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

Comments on an article by Jef Adriaenssens et al. (see record 2015-00662-015). In a recent review paper, Adriaenssens et al. concluded that about 26% of emergency nurses (EN) suffer from burnout and described their results as alarming. While commentators applaud Adriaenssens et al. efforts to provide a clearer picture of ill-health in EN, they thought that these authors' conclusions were weakened by a fundamental fact, namely, the absence of consensual, clinically valid diagnostic criteria for burnout. Trying to determine the prevalence of a condition that has no binding diagnostic criteria is problematic. Indeed, depending on how researchers decide to …
