Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Symposium of Student Scholars
With exponential technological advances, hospitals are tasked with prioritizing which expensive innovations truly impact as many patients as possible to give them the greatest chance of recovering and discharge them earlier. It is no surprise that most of the attention is focussed on pharmaceutical drugs and a variety of different equipment and machinery, but hospital facilities should look into simpler additions that can aid every patient admitted. The use of naturalistic blue-wavelength lighting is something that can benefit each patient’s recovery immensely. Multiple studies have proven positive effects that blue-depleted lighting compared to standard indoor fluorescent lighting has lowered stress …
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Symposium of Student Scholars
Pressure injuries are one of the most major challenges confronted in hospitals today – which can compromise a patient’s well-being, extend a patient's hospital admission, and can potentially contribute to disability or mortality. The prevention of pressure injuries is significant in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients; however, the prevention plan for pressure injury applications has been suboptimal as it causes a delay in medication delivery for nurses. The forms of care that are often used by healthcare professionals to improve HAPIs (hospital-acquired pressure injuries) are pressure preventative bundles – which are a set of evidence-based practices that are implemented reliably …
Implementation Of Simulation Training For Newly Graduated Nurses, Lauren Hancock, Kurstin Martin
Implementation Of Simulation Training For Newly Graduated Nurses, Lauren Hancock, Kurstin Martin
Scholars Week
Regardless of educational opportunities it is impossible to see every possible clinical situation necessary to develop adequate clinical judgment, before graduation. For this reason, we believe that simulation trainings should be implemented for newly graduated nurses upon their hiring.

Implementing The Option For 8-Hour Shifts Compared To 12-Hour Shifts To Protect The Well-Being Of Nurses And Patients, Savannah G. Bison, Madison R. Harden
Scholars Week
This project addresses the negative aspects of twelve hour shifts within the nursing profession and how a change to eight hour shifts leads to decreased burnout, increased job satisfaction, and a more positive work-life balance. The term ‘nursing shortage’ is often improperly used to imply only a deficit in registered nurses across the country; however, it is instead due to practicing nurses leaving the profession before retirement, especially in bedside positions. Nurses are searching for different paths for multiple reasons, but a common factor among all of them is burnout caused by the current system in place. This project addresses …

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand
Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand
2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference
Background:
In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.
Purpose:

Effects Of Nursing Overtime In Medical Errors, Camilla Byrd, Halle Borgel, Mya Kinney, Jena Killian, Mykayla Stephens
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
Background: The recent global pandemic has uncovered health care inequities among nursing professionals. The nursing shortage has placed pressure on overworked nurses to perform higher level critical care under dire and unsafe conditions. The stress of overworked nurses is a culprit for medical errors that affect the quality and effectiveness of patient care. Methods: Kennesaw State Library, PubMed, 35 articles screened. After thorough screening of various articles addressing this topic, we examined the quantitative and qualitativestudies performed in all areas of nursing. Results: Research suggests that nurses working overtime versus full-time hours experience physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion may …

Animal-Assisted Therapy In The Intensive Care Unit, Amanda M. Pugh
Animal-Assisted Therapy In The Intensive Care Unit, Amanda M. Pugh
Student Scholar Showcase
This paper will explore animal-assisted therapy used in intensive care units. Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are at risk for developing an array of complications called post-intensive care syndrome, which can negatively affect patients’ psychological, motor, and cognitive abilities. While the widespread use of animal-assisted therapy in the ICU is still in need of improvement, studies have shown animal-assisted therapy can improve depression and anxiety, increase motor function, and strengthen patient participation in treatment. This is significant because the benefits of animal-assisted therapy can counteract the symptoms related to post-intensive care syndrome. The studies will be analyzed, and …

Abstract
This paper is an evidence based look at the efficacy of ventilation communication in the intensive care unit (ICU) and the resources that we found to be useful in expanding said communication. This topic has become more prevalent today due to COVID-19 and the rising numbers of ICU admissions and ventilator use. We looked at various studies that found that patients on ventilators who lacked good communication with their nurses had negative mental and physical effects. Examples of this include increased rates of anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder among ICU survivors. The evidence also found that effective …
Iv Infection Control, Coleman White, Hannah Oswalt
Iv Infection Control, Coleman White, Hannah Oswalt
Scholars Week
Infection is one of the most discussed topics in the nursing world, and one topic that is commonly overlooked is IV tubing related to infection. The current rules on CCU/PCU include labeling the tubing, changing the tubing every 72 hours, and cleaning the site with an alcohol swab before injecting medications. While these rules in place are evidenced based, and work properly, there is more research that has been conducted stating better practice to control infection related to IV tubing. Through utilization of theoretical framework along with several quasi-experimental research, we have evaluated infection control effectiveness through “Scrub the Hub” …

Throughout our clinical rotations, we noticed many patients who had developed pressure ulcers caused by medical devices, which are often referred to as MDRPIs. We acknowledged this as a problem and decided to look into it further. We reviewed various articles to find the best practice when it comes to preventing/minimizing these injuries. We analyzed a meta-synthesis, a qualitative study, and an experimental study and used that as our research on the topic. After reviewing these articles, we will present our findings to a local hospital to make recommendations on how they can better prevent/minimize MDRPIs. In conclusion, MDRPIs are …

The Benefits Of Bedside Shift Report, Sarah Frank, Jordan Reed, Jordan Higgins
Scholars Week
The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of bedside shift report in the health care setting. This research will focus on an inpatient department, which is a 25-bed acute care unit with 4 special care beds. This department currently utilizes the SBAR method. However, this can improve when used in conjunction with bedside shift reports. The use of bedside shift report will improve communication and nurse-patient relationships, provide more patient privacy, and decrease time spent giving report. The use of bedside report may require a related intervention of patient teaching, so that the patient understands the purpose …
Benefits Of Increasing Patient Engagement In Plan Of Care, Madison Gillentine, Stephanie Phelps
Benefits Of Increasing Patient Engagement In Plan Of Care, Madison Gillentine, Stephanie Phelps
Scholars Week
This presentation’s focus is implementing ways to engage patients in their own plan of care during hospitalization. Patient’s presenting their needs early on during a hospital stay has been shown to improve nurse-patient communication and overall engagement. When a patient has felt that his or her specific needs have been made aware to the nursing staff, one feels more like an individual rather than a bed number. The patient will become a more active member in his or her care which leads to better outcomes and satisfaction. The more comfortable and open a patient is with the nurse about his …
Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy
Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy

Above all else, children require stability in their lives in order to develop a healthy perspective of the world. Feelings of instability can come from something as small as a change in schools. In the practice of pediatric medicine it is especially important to avoid these feelings of instability, which can lead children to develop healthcare-anxiety. Healthcare settings can be exceptionally emotionally taxing to children, because the children have a complete lack of control over their environment. This lack of control combined with fear and potentially pain can be incredibly distressing. While it is easy to disregard a child’s anxiety …
Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout
Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout
Scholars Week
This project was based on the fact that there is a severe nursing shortage happening in the United States. On average, nurses can have four to eight patients at one time which makes a twelve hour shift almost unbearable due to the stress of keeping all of the patients alive and satisfied with the care they are receiving. During the pandemic, staffing shortages have become one of the main issues faced by healthcare workers across the nation. Due to the staffing shortages and COVID-19 precautions, nurses have not only been taking on more patients but also have increased their workload …

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

The national opioid crisis has had devastating effects on the United States (US) healthcare system with the financial burden totaling more than $2 trillion from 2015 to 2018 (White House Government, 2020) and the physical burden of 128 overdose-related deaths daily (Centers for Disease Control, 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), some of these deaths are the result of deficits in education to healthcare providers about pain management treatment (CDC, 2020). Improved education for healthcare providers has resulted in a significant decline in the total number of opioid prescriptions from 2016-2019 which suggests that successful containment of …
