Needs Assessment For Palliative Care In Pediatric Oncology: An Integrative Literature Review, Tabitha Negrete
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in childhood. Cancer is the primary disease for which pediatric palliative care services are utilized worldwide. Improvement in pediatric palliative care has been identified as an ongoing research priority. There are still significant gaps in current knowledge of pediatric palliative care because education has not been integrated into curriculum and clinical experiences.
Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature review aims to provide a comprehensive review of current research about the need of nursing education on palliative care for long-term care in pediatric oncology.
Methods: This integrative literature review focused …

Maternal And Infant Attributes And Antecedents Of Breastfeeding, Riyan Yanes, Jessie Lakota Dinelli
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: The Center for Disease Control (CDC) claim that breastfeeding rates are increasing in the United States. Surveys show that 81.1% of newborn infants started to breastfeed in 2013 (2016). Unfortunately, breastfeeding duration did not meet the recommended length and of the infants born in 2013, 51.8% were breastfeeding at 6 months and 30.7% at 12 months (CDC, 2016). Breastfeeding offers various health benefits to the mother and child, which is why the identification of antecedents and attributes to breastfeeding need to be addressed in order to impact mothers and infants.

THE EFFECTS OF REENTRY PROGRAMS ON HEALTHCARE ACCESSIBILITY AND RESULTING EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT STRAIN BY EX-INMATES
Kaitlyn Muratori
Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Christina Lattner
Background: Ex-inmates are significantly more likely to use emergency rooms to seek treatment for substance abuse, mental health disorders, or poor management of chronic conditions which, if not treated on a community level, ultimately contributes to overboarding in the emergency department.
Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to use current research to examine the relationship between reentry programs across the US and healthcare accessibility, as well as the resulting strain of emergency room misuse by ex-inmates. …

Immunotherapy strategies are very promising treatments for cancer patients. Specifically, Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy focusing on the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway shows long-lasting positive results in many cancer patients. Unfortunately, not all the patients can benefit from this highly effective treatment. Hence, there is a great need for predictive biomarkers. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining has been used as a way of predicting patient response, yet shows many problems. For example, IHC utilizes an invasive biopsy and sample fixing, which creates an incomplete and delayed picture of the patient’s biochemistry and the tumor microenvironment, consequently ignoring metastases.

Gender Differences In First Authors, Peer Reviewers, And Grand Rounds Presenters In Medicine, Parisa Mortaji
Gender Differences In First Authors, Peer Reviewers, And Grand Rounds Presenters In Medicine, Parisa Mortaji
Shared Knowledge Conference
Women are underrepresented in senior academic positions that depend on accomplishments like presentations and publications, and gender bias has shown to be a factor. We studied whether gender differences existed in multiple internal medicine venues: first authorship in a national trainee poster competition; first authorship in a national specialty-specific poster competition; peer reviewer-ship in three prestigious medical journals; and in presentations at UNM grand rounds. We found some progress in gender parity overall, but not yet enough. We first studied gender differences in authorship among residents in a 2015 national internal medicine resident poster competition; we found more authors were …
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
Shared Knowledge Conference
Based on a review of research and best practices in mental health awareness and skills, this inquiry project argues for state legislative policies that would require mental health awareness and skills in the K-12 curriculum. Mental health affects individual accomplishments in every stage of people’s lives beginning in early childhood and throughout the life cycle. Prevention and treatment of mental illness plays a key role in the ability of an individual to cope with loss and develop resiliency and perseverance in challenging times and to make better decisions that improve the individual’s life and the lives of those around them. …
Clinical Outcomes Of Women With Adenocarcinoma In Situ Of The Cervix Treated By Conization: An Integrated Literature Review, Jennifer Keeley
Clinical Outcomes Of Women With Adenocarcinoma In Situ Of The Cervix Treated By Conization: An Integrated Literature Review, Jennifer Keeley
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: The incidence of cervical adenocarcinoma in situ is on the rise. Its detection, diagnosis, and management is both challenging and controversial. For these reasons, hysterectomy has historically been the treatment of choice, but many women with adenocarcinoma in situ are of reproductive age and have not completed childbearing so more conservative treatment is often desired.
Objectives: The purpose of the integrative literature review was to determine the efficacy and safety of conization as conservative treatment for women with cervical adenocarcinoma in situ wishing to preserve fertility, and to determine if one method of conization, cold knife cone or …

Finding Peace In Every Moment: The Power Of Mindfulness In Relieving Pain And Anxiety, Erica Rayner-Horn L.M.H.C.
Palliative Care Institute
We have a wealth of healing potential within us that often goes untapped as we seek outside relief from both physical pain and emotional distress. Research shows the extensive health benefits of practicing mindfulness: from boosting immunity and lowering blood pressure, to alleviating pain, reducing depression and calming anxiety. This session will explore mindfulness, how to practice it, and invite participants to practice mindfulness in simple exercises. We will discover how slowing down and living with deeper awareness of each moment helps transform reactivity and stress into moments of relaxation, ease, and peacefulness---even while facing serious illness.

Complex Palliative Care Pain Management Requires An Integrative Approach, Lucille Marchand Md, Bsn, Faahpm
Complex Palliative Care Pain Management Requires An Integrative Approach, Lucille Marchand Md, Bsn, Faahpm
Palliative Care Institute
Pain is complex, and to address pain well, it requires us to appreciate the multiple factors that create pain in a person. The complexity of pain requires more than the conventional approaches usually used to treat pain. Integrative, healing modalities are needed to address pain comprehensively and effectively with a minimum of adverse effects.

Structure Determination Of A Bioengineered Human/Porcine Factor Viii For Hemophilia A Treatment, And Improvements To The Human Factor Viii Model, Ian Smith
Graduate Student Symposium
Blood coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), is a non-enzymatic cofactor which plays a crucial role in the formation of a stable blood clot. Absence or deficiency of FVIII results in the blood disorder hemophilia A; with symptoms including internal hemorrhaging and the inability to stop bleeding from open wounds. Treatment of hemophilia A relies on infusions of blood, plasma, or protein concentrates to replace FVIII. Unfortunately, approximately 30% of patients receiving replacement FVIII generate pathologic anti-FVIII inhibitory antibodies, which both reduce the effectiveness of the FVIII therapeutic and increase the severity of hemophilia A symptoms.
We have determined the molecular structure …
