The in silico study of medicinal plants is a rapidly growing field. Techniques such as reverse screening and network pharmacology are used to study the complex cellular action of medicinal plants against disease. However, it is difficult to produce a meaningful visualization of phytochemical-protein interactions (PCPIs) in the cell. This study introduces a novel workflow combining various tools to visualize a PCPI network for a medicinal plant against a disease. The five steps are 1) phytochemical compilation, 2) reverse screening, 3) network building, 4) network visualization, and 5) evaluation. The output is a PCPI network that encodes multiple dimensions of …

Treatment Considerations For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Pediatric Down Syndrome, Erica Gastelum, Marcus Cummins, Amitoj Singh, Manuel Montoya, Gino Luis Urbano, Mary Anne Tablizo Nov 2021

Treatment Considerations For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Pediatric Down Syndrome, Erica Gastelum, Marcus Cummins, Amitoj Singh, Manuel Montoya, Gino Luis Urbano, Mary Anne Tablizo

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared to children without DS. The negative impact of OSA on health, behavior, and cognitive development in children with DS highlights the importance of timely and effective treatment. Due to the higher prevalence of craniofacial and airway abnormalities, obesity, and hypotonia in patients with DS, residual OSA can still occur after exhausting first-line options. While treatment commonly includes adenotonsillectomy (AT) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, additional therapy such as medical management and/or adjuvant surgical procedures need to be considered in refractory OSA. Given …

Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is one of the most common arrhythmias which can cause palpitation, cardiac arrest, and other symptoms affecting the work and rest activities of a patient. However, patients hardly decipher their own feelings to determine the severity of the disease thus, requiring a professional medical diagnosis. This study proposes a novel method based on image processing and convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract electrocardiography (ECG) curves from scanned ECG images derived from clinical ECG reports, and segment and classify heartbeats in the absence of a digital ECG data. The ECG curve is extracted using a comprehensive algorithm …

Which conditions treated by neurosurgeons cause the worst economic hardship in low middle-income in countries? How can public health financing be responsive to the inequities in the delivery of neurosurgical care? This review article frames the objectives of equity; quality; and efficiency in health financing to the goals of global neurosurgery. In order to glean provider perspectives on the affordability of neurosurgical care in low-resource settings; we did a survey of neurosurgeons from Indonesia and the Philippines and identified that the care of socioeconomically disadvantaged patients with malignant intracranial tumors were found to incur the highest out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally; the …

A Classification And Prediction Hybrid Model Construction With The Iqpso-Svm Algorithm For Atrial Fibrillation Arrhythmia, Liang-Hung Wang, Ze-Hong Yan, Yi-Ting Yang, Jun-Ying Chen, Tao Yang, I-Chun Kuo, Patricia Angela R. Abu, Pao-Cheng Huang, Chiung-An Chen, Shih-Lun Chen Aug 2021

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiovascular disease (CVD); and most existing algorithms are usually designed for the diagnosis (i.e.; feature classification) or prediction of AF. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms integrate the diagnosis of AF electrocardiogram (ECG) and predict the possibility that AF will occur in the future. In this paper; we utilized the MIT-BIH AF Database (AFDB); which is composed of data from normal people and patients with AF and onset characteristics; and the AFPDB database (i.e.; PAF Prediction Challenge Database); which consists of data from patients with Paroxysmal AF (PAF; the records contain the ECG preceding an …

Currently, there are numerous obstacles to performing palpation during laparoscopic surgery. The laparoscopic interface does not allow access into a patient's body anything other than the tools that are inserted through the trocars. Palpation is usually done with the surgeon's hands to detect lumps and certain anomalies underneath the skin, muscle, or tissues. It can be useful technique for augmenting surgical decision-making during laparoscopic surgery, especially when discerning operations involving cancerous tumors. Previous research demonstrated the use of tactile sensors and mechanical sensors placed at the end-effectors for palpating laparoscopically. In this study, a visual guidance system is proposed for …

Surrogacy Among Filipinos Who Have Struggled With Infertility: A Discourse Analysis, Gabrielle Marie A. Liamzon, Andrea Mari P. Santos, Marie Ashley G. Tamayo, Ma. Elizabeth J. Macapagal Mar 2021

Surrogacy Among Filipinos Who Have Struggled With Infertility: A Discourse Analysis, Gabrielle Marie A. Liamzon, Andrea Mari P. Santos, Marie Ashley G. Tamayo, Ma. Elizabeth J. Macapagal

Surrogacy continues to be practiced to address infertility in the Philippines; however, discussions on the method are sparse, given its limited accessibility and morally questionable procedures that may concern potential parents in a developing country. Using discourse analysis, the researchers interviewed ten (10) Filipino Roman Catholics who were struggling with infertility, to uncover how they construct the idea of surrogacy. The study shows the discourses on surrogacy are often approached in a detached manner, where potential parents describe the method as a last choice or one that is never considered. They articulate this position by highlighting the emotional factors surrogacy …

Detection Of Myocardial Infarction Using Ecg And Multi-Scale Feature Concatenate, Jia-Zheng Jian, Tzong-Rong Ger, Han-Hua Lai, Chi-Ming Ku, Chiung-An Chen, Patricia Angela R. Abu Mar 2021

Detection Of Myocardial Infarction Using Ecg And Multi-Scale Feature Concatenate, Jia-Zheng Jian, Tzong-Rong Ger, Han-Hua Lai, Chi-Ming Ku, Chiung-An Chen, Patricia Angela R. Abu

Diverse computer-aided diagnosis systems based on convolutional neural networks were applied to automate the detection of myocardial infarction (MI) found in electrocardiogram (ECG) for early diagnosis and prevention. However; issues; particularly overfitting and underfitting; were not being taken into account. In other words; it is unclear whether the network structure is too simple or complex. Toward this end; the proposed models were developed by starting with the simplest structure: a multi-lead features-concatenate narrow network (N-Net) in which only two convolutional layers were included in each lead branch. Additionally; multi-scale features-concatenate networks (MSN-Net) were also implemented where larger features were being …
