In the fall of 2007, the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency Program received an RRC variance in the continuity of care longitudinal geriatric experience which allowed the program to move from a long-term care/nursing home facility to an assisted living experience. Results of this 2 year project showed a significant increase in satisfaction for both faculty and learners, but competency evaluations did not meet expected goals. Based on these findings, the 19-point direct observation competency form was divided into smaller skill sets that would be more time-efficient to apply and teach.
