HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic caused a deleterious impact on global health. School-aged children were significantly impacted by the pandemic. These impacts may be attributed to the fact that this age group is at a vulnerable developmental stage and is susceptible to profound effects. We conducted a thorough literature review using PubMed, Medline, and Science Direct electronic database searches between 2020-2022. We retrieved 757 studies, 25 of which were included in our review. We considered the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical and mental health of school-aged children (5-18 years), and the results were analyzed and included in our …

Automating The Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning Process For Pediatric Patients With Medulloblastoma, Soleil Hernandez May 2023

Automating The Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning Process For Pediatric Patients With Medulloblastoma, Soleil Hernandez

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Over the past 50 years, pediatric cancer 5-year survival rates increased from 20% to 80% in high-income countries, however, these trends have not been mirrored in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). This is due in part to delayed diagnosis, higher rates of advanced disease at presentation and a growing lack of access to high quality medical personnel and technology necessary to deliver complex treatments.

The long-term goal of this study was to alleviate demanding workflows and increase global access to high-quality pediatric radiation therapy by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to automate the radiation therapy treatment planning process for pediatric patients …

Background: Neonatal acute respiratory distress is a common cause for mortality and morbidity in preterm neonates. Non-invasive ventilation is crucial for preterm neonates, nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation and nasal continuous positive airway pressure. Recently, heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula modes have been revealed as more efficient non-invasive ventilation mode in improving functional residual capacity however, other studies have questioned its efficacy and safety in comparison to other non-invasive ventilation. Many studies have investigated the common predictive factors that are associated with intubation and failure of spontaneous breathing. Consequently, this study aimed at investigating the common factors associated with prolonged …
