Selenomethionine Protects Mutant Tau N27a Cell From Oxidative Stress And Decreases Phosphorylation Of Tau, Madelin Locicero

Celebration of Learning

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of cells and aggregated tau in the hippocampus. Hyperphosphorylated tau causes the misfolding of tau proteins (aggregated tau), which are responsible for proper neuronal activity. Selenium-methionine has been known to decrease the amount of phosphorylated tau within mutant and wild type 3xTg- AD mice. However, selenium can be toxic to cell depending on the type of cells and the concentration of selenium. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect selenium-methionine has on decreasing hyperphosphorylation of tau, protecting cells from oxidative stress, and decreasing the amount of aggregated tau …

A Pilot Study On The Beneficial Effects Of Additional Selenium Supplementation To Methimazole For Treating Patients With Graves' Disease, Bin Xu, Di Wu, Hong Ying, Ying Zhang Jan 2019

A Pilot Study On The Beneficial Effects Of Additional Selenium Supplementation To Methimazole For Treating Patients With Graves' Disease, Bin Xu, Di Wu, Hong Ying, Ying Zhang

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a combination use of methimazole (MMI) and selenium (Se) in the treatment of Graves' disease (GD). Materials and methods: A total of 103 newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism patients were randomized to MMI and MMI + Se combination groups. After treatment for 6 months, the levels of triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) were observed. An in vitro culture model of thyroid cells was established and the protein expression and mRNA levels of TRAb, TPOAb, and TGAb were determined …

Alterations In Serum Levels Of Copper, Zinc, And Selenium Among Children With Sickle Cell Anemia, Rana Hasanato Jan 2019

Alterations In Serum Levels Of Copper, Zinc, And Selenium Among Children With Sickle Cell Anemia, Rana Hasanato

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Oxidative stress contributes to pathophysiological dysfunction in sickle cell anemia (SCA). Copper (Cu) is a prooxidant, whereas zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) are antioxidant trace elements. This study investigates the serum levels of Cu, Zn, and Se among children with SCA.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was performed at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh. Thirty-three children with SCA in steady state and 33 age- and sex-matched normal healthy children were included in the study. Cu, Zn, and Se levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument. Results: The median serum Cu levels among SCA patients (1.3 -g/mL) were …
