A Reinforcement Learning Based Control Approach For Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression, Jason C. Huang, Scott C. Tadler, Brian J. Mickey, Keith Jones May 2020

A Reinforcement Learning Based Control Approach For Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression, Jason C. Huang, Scott C. Tadler, Brian J. Mickey, Keith Jones

Utah Space Grant Consortium

High-dose propofol is being investigated for its potential antidepressant effect. Propofol is titrated to induce burst suppression, a specific EEG pattern. However, propofol is difficult to dose due to uncertainty in each patient’s pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), and the lack of a commercially available monitor of propofol concentration. Clinicians currently infer the proper drug dose after observing the EEG response to the given dose. In this report we share our development of an automated controller to optimally administer propofol-induced burst suppression. We designed a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, which includes two deep neural networks and relates a …

452— Potential Impacts Of Basic Reproduction Number On The Covid-19 Epidemic, Marisa Presutto

GREAT Day Posters

The basic reproduction number (R0) of a disease can be thought of as the number of cases that one case will directly generate if the rest of the population is susceptible to infection. The R0 of COVID-19 has recently become clearer; toward the beginning of the outbreak, the Imperial College Group estimated it to be somewhere between 1.5 and 3.5 (Imai et al. 2020), but they have now assumed a value of 2.4 (Ferguson et al. 2020). Using the Watts-Strogatz small-world model, I examined the effects of different R0 values within the original range on the …

Students As Investigators: Utilizing Active Learning To Engage Genetic Counseling Students, Stacey E. Wahl Ph.D., Dana L. Ladd Ph.D.

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Providing one-shot instruction sessions can be difficult, particularly in the graduate learning environment. As librarians, we want to provide students with the skills to search effectively for health information without overwhelming or confusing them. In health science graduate programs, we are expected to connect literature searching skills with the content of the courses in a manner that is engaging to students. This challenge can be exacerbated when students are new to graduate school and have not yet become familiar with scientific literature searching or the research process. Two medical librarians sought to overcome these challenges by empowering genetic counseling students …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Gait In People With Parkinson’S Disease To Improve The Detection Of Risk Of Falls, Ryan Meidinger Mar 2020

Longitudinal Analysis Of Gait In People With Parkinson’S Disease To Improve The Detection Of Risk Of Falls, Ryan Meidinger

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Within 3 years of diagnosis, more than 85% of people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) develop gait problems, which may lead to falls resulting in serious injury and reduced quality of life. The evolution of gait impairments with PD progression and the relationship between locomotor performance and falls in PD are unclear. In addition, large individual variations exist at the level of gait performances corresponding to specific levels of disease severity. Deficits in cognitive and sensory-motor functions in PD also impair the ability to walk while doing another task (i.e., dual-tasking). When attentional resources in PD patients are allocated to more …

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are an upsetting setback for many athletes that require a long and costly recovery process. The injury rates are four times greater in women than men. Preventative measures that help to prevent ACL injuries are limited to stretching and strengthening. Therefore, this review aims to investigate if oral contraceptive [I] usage provides a possible new avenue for prevention of ACL injury [O] in young female athletes (ages 18-30) [P] compared to those that do not take oral contraceptives [C].

Methods: A literature review was performed though PubMed, Google Scholar, SCOPUS Database, and ClinicalKey …

Manipulation Of Ar-V7 In Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer, Sean Simpson Jan 2020

Manipulation Of Ar-V7 In Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer, Sean Simpson

Capstone Showcase

Abstract

Introduction: Prostate cancer is the leading cancer affecting men of all races in the United States, and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. If caught early, many have had success in combating the disease, but if the cancer metastasizes, the 5-year survival rate drops to only 30%. Current treatment options heavily involve hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. While these treatments can be effective for early stage prostate cancer, they can fall short in preventing the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body. This review analyzes a new potential way of preventing …

The Efficacy Of Ketamine In Adult Patients With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder With Symptoms Refractory To Standard Of Care Treatment., Brooke Thornton Jan 2020

The Efficacy Of Ketamine In Adult Patients With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder With Symptoms Refractory To Standard Of Care Treatment., Brooke Thornton

Capstone Showcase

First line pharmacologic treatments for adult patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involve selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSRI/SNRIs). These drug classes often fail to deliver timely relief of symptoms as well as maintain longevity of symptom recurrence. This research analyzed the use of ketamine in adult patients suffering with OCD for the purposes of more efficacious management of symptoms. Although ketamine demonstrated a timelier relief of symptoms in some small clinical studies, its effects were ultimately unable to be sustained long term. Additionally, a wide range of adverse effects including dissociation, and rebound symptoms were observed. As a result, large …

The Efficacy Of Aquablation In The Treatment Of Large Volume Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, Jessica Greenwood

Capstone Showcase

Introduction:

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a condition affecting adult males causing symptoms including urinary frequency, incontinence, and urinary retention. While first line treatment methods include lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic therapies, many patients elect for surgical procedures for symptomatic relief. In patients with extremely large volume prostates the surgical method most commonly used has been an open prostatectomy, which is associated with both long-term efficacy and more surgical complications than minimally invasive techniques. Therefore, this review analyzes Aquablation (I) for symptom management (O) in patients diagnosed with BPH (P) compared to open prostatectomy (C).

Methods:

A literature search was conducted …

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping (Dcc) Compared To Early Cord Clamping (Ecc) In Preterm Infants, Madelynn Fretto

Capstone Showcase

Early cord clamping (ECC) versus delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been studied in preterm infants. The question that was researched is, in pregnant women who are giving birth [P], does delayed umbilical cord clamping (DCC) [I] as compared to early cord clamping [C] improve outcome of preterm infants born before 37 weeks gestation [O]? Results showed preterm infants with DCC had increased hematocrit and hemoglobin, decreasing their risk of anemia. There was not a significant difference in the incidence of jaundice between the two groups. Results suggested DCC has long-term neuroprotective effects. There were no significant differences in intraventricular hemorrhage …
