The success of radiotherapy in tumour control depends on the total dose given. However, the tolerance of the normal tissues surrounding the tumour limits this dose. It is not known why some patients develop radiation toxicity and, currently, it is not possible to predict before treatment which patients will experience adverse effects. Thus, there is an unmet clinical need for a new test to identify patients at risk of radiation toxicity. The folate receptor (FR) was identified in 1986 and has been established as a ‘molecular Trojan Horse’ target for the uptake of folate-conjugated organic molecules into cells. The FR is overexpressed in many malignancies, including those of the ovary, uterus, breast, cervix, and prostate, yet it is reportedly under-expressed in normal healthy cells. This difference in expression and the high affinity/specificity of folate towards the folate receptor presents a promising drug delivery system. The last decade has seen significant development in understanding the genetic basis of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), with the underlying somatic mutational landscape revealed by genome and targeted exome sequencing. The aim of this research was to conduct a series of original investigations to develop insight into the utility and clinical application of these disease markers. Initially, three recently identified disease-specific molecular markers (mutations in JAK2, CALR and CSF3R) were utilised to measure the burden of disease post allogeneic transplantation using methods based on quantitative PCR, capillary electrophoresis and Sanger sequencing. Maternal obesity increases the risk of metabolic complications in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Effective weight management following childbirth may reduce long-term metabolic risks among women of child bearing age. The aim of this study was to investigate the diet and health behaviours of pregnant and postpartum women in Ireland. Accurate dietary assessment in pregnancy is often difficult to achieve. We have shown that dietary under-reporting is more likely among pregnant women who are younger, materially deprived, obese and who have increased adiposity. Three supported gold nanocomposites, gold on titanium dioxide (Au/TiO2), gold on single walled Au/SWCNT and gold on carbon black (Au/P90) were prepared and systematically characterised using Scanning Electron Microscopy/Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy/Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/STEM/TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX), X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), (Nitrogen) N2 adsorption, Ultra Violet-Visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to probe the nanoparticle and support physical and chemical characteristics as well as the metal-support interactions. For all composites, the Au nanoparticles were found to be crystalline with a well-defined and narrow particle-size distribution centered between 4-10nm.

The central objective of this study was to assess solar radiation-induced changes in cellular function, mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA to further investigate the role of these energy-dedicated and metabolically essential organelles in the response to the main environmental stressor associated with skin cancer initiation. An in vitro approach was chosen employing the human malignant melanoma (A375) and human amelanotic melanoma (C32) cells and the human spontaneously immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT). The research work began from the investigation of silver dissolution behaviour from pure silver and silver-platinum alloys in solutions with or without chloride using the technique of cyclic volammetry (CV). A zero resistance amperometry (ZRA) measurement was carried out to study the effect of platinum on the silver dissolution behaviour in 0.89%wt. NaCI solution. Obstetrical complications including recurrent miscarriage, pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affect 1%-5% of pregnant women (Younis and Samueloff 2003). Dysfunctional trophoblasts, impaired development of spiral arteries, imbalance in systems controlling the dilation and contraction of spiral arteries, placental fibrin clots and intervillous thrombosis are all possible factors that can result in an insufficient placental circulation. The combination of the hypercoagulable state of pregnancy and presence of genetic thrombophilic markets has the potential to induce placental thrombosis and cause placental insufficiency with subsequent obstetrical complications.
