Background/aim: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the leading infectious causes of mortality, and diabetes mellitus is a globally prevalent disease. Consequently, the cooccurrence of these two disorders can be common and create challenging medical conditions. Therefore, it was aimed to compare the various aspects of CAP in diabetic and nondiabetic patients, in order to have a comprehensive and comparative picture of the differences. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, CAP patients with and without diabetes were assessed for clinicoradiological signs, laboratory features, disease severity, and pneumonia outcomes. Results: Analyzed herein were 172 CAP patients (77 had diabetes and …

Although different antiviral, antiinflammatory, and immunomodulatory drugs are used, current evidence is insufficient as to which drug is more efficient. Our study compared favipiravir and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/RTV) therapies in inpatient care for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Materials and methods: Demographic data, test results, treatments, and latest status of patients receiving inpatient COVID-19 pneumonia therapy were recorded. The initial favipiravir and LPV/RTV receiving groups were compared regarding the need for intensive care units (ICU) and mortality. Logistic regression analysis was performed by including variables showing significant differences …

Chest Ct Features Of The Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Furkan Ufuk, Recep Savaş Jan 2020

Chest Ct Features Of The Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Furkan Ufuk, Recep Savaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A new type of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is rapidly spreading worldwide and causes pneumonia, respiratory distress, thromboembolic events, and death. Chest computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in the diagnosis of viral pneumonia, monitoring disease progression, determination of disease severity, and evaluating therapeutic efficacy. Chest CT can show important clues of 2019-nCoV disease (also known as COVID-19) in patients with an appropriate clinic. Prompt diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential to prevent disease transmission and provides close clinical observation of patients with clinically severe disease. Therefore, radiologists and clinicians should be familiar with the CT imaging findings of COVID-19 pneumonia. Herein, …

Results: MMP-2 and -9 serum levels and their activities were higher in CAP patients than controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Low-risk patients had lower levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-1 than high-risk patients (P = 0.044, P = 0.001, respectively). Pretreatment serum TIMP-1 level was higher in patients with TCS of >3 days (P = 0.004) and was correlated with oxygenation and …

Cut-Off Value Of D-Dimer In Pulmonary Thromboembolism And Pneumonia, Ayşegül Karalezli̇, H. Canan Hasanoğlu, Selda Kaya, Eli̇f Babaoğlu, Z. Ci̇bali̇ Açikgöz, Asi̇ye Kanbay, Derya Öztuna

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: The differential diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) and pneumonia remains difficult in emergency rooms. High D-dimer levels in the pneumonia may be misdiagnosed as PTE on the basis of similar clinical, radiological, and laboratory findings. Since D-dimer elevation may also be seen in pneumonia cases, the comparison of D-dimer values in patients diagnosed as pneumonia and PTE, in order to determine a cut-off value between the 2 diseases, was aimed in this study. Materials and methods: Patients in the community acquired pneumonia (CAP) group were classified according to the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2001 criteria. Groups III and IV …
