Effect Of The Intern Survival Book Handbook In Medical City Fort Worth Family Medicine Residency Program, Nancy Sang, Harry Pham, Tammy Nguyen, Zara Soomro, Patrick Feng

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Background: The optimization of medical training is a critical concern amid dynamic shifts in both medical and societal landscapes. Research indicates that a substantial proportion of medical trainees experience stress, anxiety, and depression, with an estimated depression rate of 29% among medical residents, compared to 8% among nonphysicians. Furthermore, the suicide rate among physicians is twice that of the general population. Difficulty in adapting to new environments, responsibilities, and training levels exacerbate these challenges. This study evaluates the efficacy of "The Intern Survival Handbook" in mitigating stressors among new trainees, enhancing their work performance, and promoting overall mental health. Methods: …

Introduction: According to the American Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy (ASGE), choledocholithiasis is defined as the presence of gallstones in biliary tree. Choledocholithiasis is concomitantly present in approximately 1 to 10 percent of patients with cholelithiasis. Choledocholithiasis can be described as small <15 >mm, large >15 mm, and difficult due to anatomic location, impaction, or unusual hardness/ shape. Choledocholithiasis is managed endoscopically with large balloon papillary dilation, cholangioscopy-guided intraductal laser and electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL), and escalation to laparoscopic common bile duct exploration, if endoscopic procedures fail. Thus far, there are sparse studies that show the requirement of choledochotomy in large and …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Faculty development is an important component for ACGME accreditation of residency programs. 1-3 There are multiple strategies for faculty development with methods including workshops, lunch-ins, and online modules. 10-12 Having successful approaches to develop faculty has lead to self-reported improvement in teaching and clinical skills, intrapersonal and interpersonal growth with faculty given more positive ratings by learners. 8,9 Beyond the individual faculty, there can be system wide cultural shifts supportive of scholarly teaching. 10 Delivering content that is convenient and valuable to the faculty can be challenging. 3,4 If resident physicians can deliver effective convenient faculty development programs then …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

Residency is a demanding period of training that requires long hours and prolonged periods of high mental functioning coupled with an emotionally and physically exhausting work load. Nearly half of all physicians experience burnout. Research has suggested that symptoms of burnout are present even in the earliest parts of physician training and the COVID-19 pandemic presented unique factors to the most recent groups of residents. The various burnout screening tools discussed in literature are limited by barriers of cost and lack of specificity for residency. In response to these findings, program specific resident wellness initiatives are now required for accreditation. …
