Pilot Project: Developing A Standardized Evidence-Based Education Process For Nurses To Enhance New Medication Eduction Of Hospitalized Patients With Heart Failure, Michele Ann Crotteau

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description: Research has shown that health information is difficult for the average adult to understand while clear communication helps patients feel involved and increases adherence to treatment. The Joint Commission recommends Health Literacy (HL) assessment and the use of the Teach Back Method (TBM). Medication errors that occur between the RN and elderly patient are preventable when the RN communicates effectively about the patient’s medications. A paucity of research exists evaluating TBM for nurse-patient communications. This Quality Improvement (QI) Pilot Project (PP) took place over 3-months, aimed to improve new medication education to elderly patients with Heart Failure (HF). …

Applications Of Machine Learning Methods In Health Outcomes Research: Heart Failure In Women, Khalid Abdullah Alhussain Jan 2020

Applications Of Machine Learning Methods In Health Outcomes Research: Heart Failure In Women, Khalid Abdullah Alhussain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

There is robust evidence that heart failure (HF) is associated with substantial mortality, morbidity, poor health-related quality of life, healthcare utilization, and economic burden. Previous research has revealed that there are sex differences in the epidemiology, etiology, and disease burden of HF. However, research on HF among women, especially postmenopausal women, is limited. To fill the knowledge gap, the three related aims of this dissertation were to: (1) identify knowledge gaps in HF research among women, especially postmenopausal women, using unsupervised machine learning methods and big data (i.e., articles published in PubMed); (2) identify emerging predictors (i.e., polypharmacy and some …

Hierarchical Clustering To Predict The Response Of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy In Patients With Heart Failure, Rukayat Bukola Adeosun Jan 2020

Hierarchical Clustering To Predict The Response Of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy In Patients With Heart Failure, Rukayat Bukola Adeosun

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The heterogeneous nature of today’s evolving health databases requires new techniques and approaches to process these data and extract clinically useful information. This relevant information obtained can be used to improve the response rate of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with heart failure. Hierarchical clustering (HC) which is an unsupervised ML technique may uncover clusters within the bulk of data of patient population which is useful for strategies towards precision and personalized medicine. This study aims to investigate how HC can be used to automatically group a bulk of clinically acquired CRT data into clusters and subgroups that could …
