Discerning The True Dilemma Of Diabetes Among Hispanics, Ramon Ponce
Discerning The True Dilemma Of Diabetes Among Hispanics, Ramon Ponce
Nursing | Senior Theses
There is a common misconception that the primary role of nurses is to follow doctors’ orders and treat patients who are currently suffering and experiencing pain. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes can be prevented and better managed if the population who is greatest at risk is better informed and educated on the disease. Different cultures and ethnicities have different foods that unfortunately puts them at risk to get diabetes. Hispanics typically follow a diet that is high in carbohydrates, saturated fats, and sugars that greatly contribute to the development of diabetes. Often, Hispanics are not educated enough to comprehend the …
Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Increases The Excitability Of Pre-Motor Glutamatergic Dorsal Vagal Complex Neurons From Hyperglycemic Mice, Jordan B. Wean, Bret N. Smith
Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Increases The Excitability Of Pre-Motor Glutamatergic Dorsal Vagal Complex Neurons From Hyperglycemic Mice, Jordan B. Wean, Bret N. Smith
Physiology Faculty Publications
Intracerebroventricular administration of the protein hormone fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) to the hindbrain produces potent antidiabetic effects in hyperglycemic mice that are likely mediated through a vagal parasympathetic mechanism. FGF19 increases the synaptic excitability of parasympathetic motor neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) from hyperglycemic, but not normoglycemic, mice but the source of this synaptic input is unknown. Neurons in the area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) express high levels of FGF receptors and exert glutamatergic control over the DMV. This study tested the hypothesis that FGF19 increases glutamate release in the DMV …
Exploring Β-Cell Function And Heterogeneity In Obese Sm/J Mice, Mario Alejandro Miranda
Exploring Β-Cell Function And Heterogeneity In Obese Sm/J Mice, Mario Alejandro Miranda
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic β-cells perform glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, a process required to maintain systemic glucose homeostasis. Obesity promotes glycemic and inflammatory stress, causing β-cell death and dysfunction, resulting in diabetes. Efforts to improve β-cell function in obesity have been hampered by observations that β-cells are highly heterogeneous, varying in morphology, function, and gene expression. There is great need to understand the breadth of β-cell heterogeneity in health and obesity to improve diabetic therapies.High fat-fed SM/J mice spontaneously transition from hyperglycemic-obese to normoglycemic-obese with age, providing a unique opportunity to study β-cell adaptation. Here, we show that as they resolve hyperglycemia, obese SM/J …

Evaluation Of Sleep Quality And Duration In Pregnancy And Risk Of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Prospective Follow-Up Study, Saloumeh Peivandi, Ali Habibi, Seyed Hamzeh Hosseini, Mohammad Khademloo, Mohammad Raisian, Hedieh Pournorouz
BioMedicine
Background and Objectives: Sleep disorders during pregnancy may be linked with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality and duration in pregnancy and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Materials and Methods: This prospective follow-up study was performed on 240 pregnant women with a gestational age between 20 to 24 weeks, who were referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari from 2018 to 2019 for prenatal care. The sleep quality of all eligible women were evaluated with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). During the 26 to 28 weeks of …
The Relationship Between Kidney Function And Cognitive Function In Type Ii Diabetes, Erika Pacheco
The Relationship Between Kidney Function And Cognitive Function In Type Ii Diabetes, Erika Pacheco
Honors College
Individuals who are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) have shown decline in proper kidney function, ultimately leading to a form of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in about one-third of T2DM cases. Even though these are alarming rates of both diseases, these conditions are rarely studied concurrently. The general focus for this research is to identify whether or not kidney function in individuals with T2DM relates to their cognitive function. Specifically, is albuminuria in individuals with T2DM a risk for poorer cognitive performance? Maine Syracuse Longitudinal Study (MSLS) data for the 121 participants with T2DM was analyzed through correlational …
Physical Activity Behavior Comparisons Between Adults With And Without Type 1 Diabetes, Cassandra M. Beattie, Jesse A. Stein, Katie Heinrich
Physical Activity Behavior Comparisons Between Adults With And Without Type 1 Diabetes, Cassandra M. Beattie, Jesse A. Stein, Katie Heinrich
Health Behavior Research
Physical activity (PA) is a widely accepted strategy to manage chronic diseases like type 1 diabetes; however, unique PA barriers likely result in lower PA levels among person(s) with type 1 diabetes (PWT1D), compared to person(s) without type 1 diabetes (PWOT1D). The integrated theory of health behavior change (ITHBC) (i.e., knowledge/beliefs, self-regulation, and self-management) provides a helpful framework for understanding PA and other health behaviors. This research aimed to determine differences in PA between adult PWT1D and PWOT1D, and characterize their PA-related behaviors using the ITHBC. Participants (N = 90; 86.7% female, 90% white) were recruited via social media …

It’s that crazy part of the semester. Finals are coming up, and you find yourself staying awake later and later trying to cram for important tests. The night before your toughest final, you decide to pull an all nighter. It’s the only way you’ll be able to learn all those facts. The day of the test, you feel awful, but you make it through, and have a feeling you probably passed. As you go back to your dorm to crash, all seems well. You think to yourself, “that one night of lost sleep probably won’t hurt me at all.”

Diabetes, the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, is caused by excessive blood glucose. Type 1 diabetes is a variation of the disease characterized by a deficiency in insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that allows cells to take up glucose from the blood and receive energy. Lack of insulin results in accumulation of sugar in the bloodstream, and subsequently dehydration, excessive urination, and tissue damage. The need to prevent the disease is urgent, as over a million children or young adults in the world have type 1 diabetes, and over 100,000 cases of type 1 …
Midfoot And Ankle Movement Dysfunction In People With Diabetes Mellitus And Peripheral Neuropathy, Hyo Jung Jeong
Midfoot And Ankle Movement Dysfunction In People With Diabetes Mellitus And Peripheral Neuropathy, Hyo Jung Jeong
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
People with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy (DMPN) have midfoot and ankle musculoskeletal problems, including limited joint mobility and weakness and atrophy of foot intrinsic and calf muscles. Impaired foot structures and function could lead to midfoot and ankle movement dysfunction, measured by a heel rise task. A repeated movement dysfunction during weightbearing tasks (e.g., heel rise, walking) could cause excessive stress on the plantar tissue, which is a leading cause of plantar ulceration in people with DMPN. Understanding heel rise performance and the underlying mechanisms could help prevent the sequence of events associated with plantar ulcer development in people …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is one of America’s leading chronic diseases with comorbidities contributing to lower health statuses and increased health care costs. While it is known that lowering HbA1c reduces the deleterious effects of diabetes, the capability to identify people with diabetes at risk for uncontrolled HbA1c levels or developing comorbidities based on the compliance rates for different oral antihyperglycemic medication classes (OAMCs) and financial assistance programs does not yet exist. These quantitative longitudinal retrospective studies examined the association between medication compliance, using Proportion of Days Covered (PDC), by OAMC and Medicare financial aid programs, on predicting HbA1c levels and comorbidities in …
