Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was planned to investigate the effects of two different concentrations (10 and 40 mg/kg) of monensin, carboxylic ionophore antibiotic, on the ECG and the serum Na + and K + concentrations of rabbits. Fifteen male rabbits, about 2 kg and 1 year old, were used. ECGs were recorded by a direct writing electrocardiograph. Blood samples for measuring serum Na + and the K + concentrations were collected and the leads I, II, II, aVR, aVL and aVF were recorded before and 6 hours after monensin was given. The durations and amplitudes of waves on the trace were …

A seven-month-old male collie was brought to our clinic with complaints of exhaustaion and fatigue for the past month, inability to stand on its hind legs, loss of voice and anorexia for the past week. In clinical examination, increase in heart frequency, difficulty in lifting the head, tetraparesis, regurgitation and urinary incontinence were observed. MG was suspected and 0.05 mg/kg i.m. neostigmine methylsulfate was given for clinical diagnosis. A positive response was seen within 30 minutes of drug application. The same drug was administered 3 hours later and the same positive clinical findings were observed. The disease was diagnosed as …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of the supplementation of yeast, molasses and barley to barley straw diets on the dry matter intake, digestibility and ruminal fermentation in sheep were investigated. Ten male merino sheep were used in a changeover design trial of five 30-day periods. Baker's yeast (50 g/kg straw), molasses (100g/kg straw) and barley grain (100 g/kg straw) were given either separately or in combination as supplements to barley straw. Supplementation increased the total dry matter intake by 18.2-36.8 %. Supplements given alone or in combination had no effect on dry matter and organic matter digestibility of the diet. Crude protein digestibility …

Fine Structure Of The Chloride Cell In The Gill Epithelium Of Brachydaniorerio(Cyprinidae, Teleostei), Sema Isisağ, Hatice Karakişi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main ultrastructural properties of the gill epithelium of the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio are investigated. The pavement cells are distinguished with their microvilli, infolding protrusions and construction of an intercellular channel system, while the chloride cells sited in filamental and especially respiratory lamellar epithelia are characterized by a high number of well developed, large mitochondria and an expansive, membranous tubular system. The close relationship observed between these cell types indicates that, at least ultrastructurally, chloride cells are communicated with the external milieu via the channel system of the pavement cells.

Peptide Profile Of Low-Fat Edam Cheese, Erdoğan Küçüköner, Zahur U. Haque

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Low-fat Edam cheese was manufactured using conventional cheese-making procedures using low-fat milk (1.5% fat). The cheese samples were aged for six months at 5 to 6°C. The cheese was analyzed for biochemical characteristics and peptide content. The peptide contents were determined with reverse phase chromatography. The association property of proteins and peptides in the soluble fraction of the cheese was determined using hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The overall peptide quantity increased with age with a marked increase in hydrophobic peptide content.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Twenty naturally infected horses were divided into two groups (10 control and 10 experimental) according to EPG values. An injectable formulation of moxidectin, in a dose of 0.3 mg/kg, was given to the horses orally in jam syrup. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on EPG values. The same dose of the drug was applied to an additional 25 horses to test for side effects. The drug was found to be highly effective (100%) against strongylin parasites on days 7, 14. and 21. No side effects were observed.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In recent years, it has been discussed intensively whether the potassium channel openers or blockers have antiarrhythmic effect during ischemia and reperfusion. Although there are many in vitro studies suggesting the potassium channel blokers especial-ly glibenclamide have antiarrhythmic effect, there is a very few in vivo expertiment to support the same result. In the present study, left arteria coronaria descendence (LAD) was ligated in 6min and following reperfusion was made by relasing the ligature. ECG and arterial blood pressure were recorded during the ischemia and reperfusion. The heart rate, the length of arrhythmia, the score of arrhythmia and the number …

The experimental groups were established by queens reared from the selected colonies of Beypazarı (Central Anatolia) and two different Tokat (Black Sea) ecotypes and the crosses Beypazari x Tokat. Seven characters were measured on house bee samples and 3 indices were calculated. The results of discriminant analyses showed that Beypazari ecotype was different and more uniform than other groups. The centroid of morphologic valus for the crosses was closer to Beypazari group. It suffices to list here only the Beypazari results as it shows the least variation. The following means were obtainend: 6.62±0.008 mm for proboscis length, 0.36±0.002 mm for …
