Background: During a code blue event (CBE), the environment becomes highly stressful and intense. Nurses rapidly transition from performing life-saving procedures on their patients to carrying out their usual duties. Without proper debriefing, nurses cannot properly process their emotions leading to increased burnout and secondary traumatic stress (Stamm, 2010).

Aims and Objectives. This literature review's objective was to synthesize evidence from previously published literature on telemedicine interventions' effectiveness on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy compliance.

Background. It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from a form of Sleep Apnea (SA), and those up to 80 percent of the cases of moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are undiagnosed (Sleep Apnea, n,d). The first-line therapy for OSA is CPAP. However, CPAP therapy is associated with low compliance rates.

Evidence-based approaches include supplemental group sessions, case manager interventions, and provision of at-home resources. Failure to recognize deterioration is a preventable patient safety and quality issue. To address this problem, since 2013, Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KP NCAL) has piloted Advance Alert Monitor (AAM) at two hospitals. A regional health system’s decision to rapidly implement a new electronic health record (EHR) in order to meet Stage 2 meaningful use requirements led to a need for innovative cost-containment strategies. Tapping the local pool of unemployed newly graduated nurses as half the required super user workforce leveraged the technology skills of novice nurses registered nurses as trainers of experienced nurses in five hospitals. Unnecessary delays in discharge planning can extend the length of stay (LOS) and add non-reimbursable days for socially and medically complex patients thereby increasing the financial burden to healthcare organizations. The literature supports enhanced discharge communication strategies and the use of checklists to facilitate safe and timely discharges. Following root cause analyses of significant discharge delays, one hospital identified gaps in communication as key precursors associated with discharge planning breakdown when discharging patients to skilled nursing facilities. Review of these events demonstrated the need for concurrent communication strategies between multidisciplinary care team members in planning for complex discharges.
