Hiv Risk Perception And Distribution Of Hiv Risk Among African, Caribbean And Other Black People: Mixed Methods Results From The Blacch Study, Shamara Baidoobonso, Greta Bauer, Kathy Speechley, Erica Lawson

Plain Language Summary: African, Caribbean and other Black people are a priority population for HIV prevention. This research found that perceptions about HIV risk in this population do not reflect actual risk. Furthermore, HIV risk behaviours in this population are more common among individuals with higher social standing. Background: African, Caribbean and other Black (ACB) people are a priority group for HIV prevention in Canada, but little is known about the epidemiology of HIV risk in this group. Furthermore, perceptions community members and service providers have about HIV risk may not reflect the overall distribution of risk in this population. …

Estimating The Impact Of Community-Level Interventions: The Search Trial And Hiv Prevention In Sub-Saharan Africa, Laura Balzer, Maya Petersen, Joshua Schwab, Mark Van Der Laan

Evaluation of community level interventions to prevent HIV infection presents significant methodological challenges. Even when it is feasible to randomly assign a treatment versus control level of the intervention to each community in a sample, measurement of incident HIV infection remains difficult. In this talk we describe an experimental design developed for the SEARCH Trial, a large community randomized trial that will evaluate the impact of expanded treatment on incident HIV and other outcomes. Regular community-wide testing campaigns are conducted and a random sample of community members who fail to attend a campaign are tracked. The data generated by this …

Why Match In Individually And Cluster Randomized Trials?, Laura B. Balzer, Maya L. Petersen, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Laura B. Balzer
The decision to match individuals or clusters in randomized trials is motivated by both practical and statistical concerns. Matching protects against chance imbalances in baseline covariate distributions and is thought to improve study credibility. Matching is also implemented to increase study power. This article compares the asymptotic efficiency of the pair-matched design, where units are matched on baseline covariates and the treatment randomized within pairs, to the independent design, where units are randomly paired and the treatment randomized within pairs. We focus on estimating the average treatment effect and use the efficient influence curve to understand the information provided by …

Originating in southwestern Ontario, the Black, African and Caribbean Canadian Health (BLACCH) Study began its work in 2009. The BLACCH Study is a mixed-methods community-based research project designed with the goal of improving health care access and the health status of Black people from Canada, Africa, the Caribbean and other parts of the world, who reside in London and Middlesex County, Ontario. The research team includes The University of Western Ontario, the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection, and the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre. The purpose behind this report is to shed light on the findings and outcomes that have emerged from …

Background: Elevated serum bilirubin has been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, serum bilirubin is also related with several potential confounders related to CVD, such as obesity. Mendelian randomization has been proposed as a method to address challenges to validity from confounding and reverse causality. It utilizes genotype to estimate causal relationships between a gene product and physiological outcomes. In this report, we demonstrate its use in assessing direct causal relations between serum bilirubin levels and CVD risk factors, including obesity, cholesterol, measures of vascular function and blood pressure. Methods: Study subjects included 868 asymptomatic individuals. Study …

Background Identifying risk factors that affect excess weight gain during pregnancy is critical, especially among women who are at a higher risk for obesity. The goal of this study was to determine if acculturation, a possible risk factor, was associated with gestational weight gain in a predominantly Puerto Rican population. Methods We utilized data from Proyecto Buena Salud, a prospective cohort study of Hispanic women in Western Massachusetts, United States. Height, weight and gestational age were abstracted from medical records among participants with full-term pregnancies (n=952). Gestational weight gain was calculated as the difference between delivery and prepregnancy weight. Acculturation …
