This presentation covers the development of electronic cigarettes and presents statistics related to their manufacture and use. Also included are facts about how addictive the products are, especially to young people, who are particularly vulnerable to addiction. The FDA has begun work to end sales of e-cigarette products to minors. Included in the presentation are formulae for the various vaping products, which are not healthy for users or people in their vicinity. Telephone calls to poison call centers increased drastically from 2010 to 2014.

  • Retention of nicotine on porous, hydrophilic surfaces can be long enough to allow reaction with ambient gases to form TSNAs (tobacco specific nitrosamines).

  • Potential risk for third-hand exposure over time appears to be low, but should be verified by longer term studies.

  • Use of ECs (electronic cigarettes) should be consistent with traditional cigarette smoking policies.

Dr. Marcham was the team leader of this project and was one of 14 members who created this white paper. Electronic-cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery-powered devices of many different configurations that deliver vaporized nicotine and other chemicals or flavorings to users, but that do not contain tobacco or require combustion. E-cigarettes have an internal, rechargeable, battery-operated heat source that converts liquid nicotine and/or flavorings into a mist or vapor that the user inhales. These devices are frequently promoted as a healthier or safer alternative to traditional cigarettes for users and bystanders.
