Supplementation with micronutrients, including vitamins, iron and zinc, is a key strategy to alleviate child malnutrition. However, association of gastrointestinal disorders with iron has led to ongoing debate over their administration. To better understand their impact on gut microbiota, we analyse the bacterial, protozoal, fungal and helminth communities of stool samples collected from a subset of 80 children at 12 and 24 months of age, previously enrolled into a large cluster randomized controlled trial of micronutrient supplementation in Pakistan (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00705445). We show that while bacterial diversity is reduced in supplemented children, vitamins and iron (as well as …

Interplay Between Oxidative Stress, Sirt1, Reproductive And Metabolic Functions, Faiza Alam, Hareem Syed, Sofia Amjad, Mukhtiar Baig, Taseer Ahmed Khan, Rehana Rehman

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Silent information Regulators (SIRT1) gene stimulates antioxidants' expression, repairs cells damaged by oxidative stress (OS), and prevents the cells' dysfunction. In particular, the role of different Sirtuins, particularly SIRT1 in reproduction, has been widely studied over the past decade. Decreased SIRT 1 causes mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage in both male and female gametes (Sperms and Oocytes), leading to infertility. In the female reproductive system, SIRT1 regulates proliferation and apoptosis in granulosa cells (GCs), and its down-regulation is associated with a reduced ovarian reserve. SIRT1 also modulates the stress response to OS …

To Determine The Efficacy Of Bilateral Inferior Petrosal Sinus Sampling In Differentiating Cushing Disease From Ectopic Cushing Syndrome, Muhammad Azeemuddin, Tanveer Ul Haq, Shahmeer Khan, Raza Sayani, Ayesha Shoukat Hussain, Rumaisa Khan Jan 2021

To Determine The Efficacy Of Bilateral Inferior Petrosal Sinus Sampling In Differentiating Cushing Disease From Ectopic Cushing Syndrome, Muhammad Azeemuddin, Tanveer Ul Haq, Shahmeer Khan, Raza Sayani, Ayesha Shoukat Hussain, Rumaisa Khan

Department of Radiology

Management of endogenous Cushing syndrome is based on its aetiology. Increased Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) levels are the most common cause of this disorder and, therefore, it is critical to determine the source of ACTH before further management. Dynamic post contrast MRI is currently the most common investigation implied to diagnose pituitary adenoma; however, it comes with the drawback of low specificity and high false positive results. Inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS) is an established invasive procedure performed to differentiate central versus peripheral source of ACTH which, in turn, results in hypercortesolaemia. This is a series of 14 patients who underwent …
