Obstacles To Graduation: A Look At Poverty’S Effect On Academic Work, Julia M. Bernard, Maike Klein

Julia M. Bernard

Our presentation was aimed at providing a thorough overview of concepts that interfere with an adolescent’s ability to stay in school and graduate. Additionally, the presentation addressed what other factors of poverty, such as risk-taking behaviors (e.g., marijuana use, binge drinking, or sexual activity), might carry over into college life and affect a student’s academic career. Variables connected to family community, family responsibilities, and adolescents’ self-esteem were described as well. Finally, the presentation discussed factors that play into a student’s willingness to seek out college campus resources for support. With this paper, we hope to outline variables that lead to …

An Innovative Behavioral Interview For Pre-Admission Selection Of Occupational Therapy Students, Kitsum Li, Julia L. Wilbarger, Shad St. Louis

Kitsum Li

The goal for pre-admission interview is to identify students who will be successful both academically and professionally. The traditional structured pre-admission interview has not been shown to be effective in predicting students’ success in academic and fieldwork performance. This article describes an innovative behavioral interview process during which applicants interviewed simulated clients as part of the preadmission selection process. The goals of the pre-admission behavioral interview were to observe applicants’ behavior as team players, and to assess their interpersonal communication skills, capability to be reflective, and professionalism. During the behavioral interview, faculty interviewers assessed the applicants’ performance in the planning …

Excellence in academic performance at the graduate level requires good command of writing skills. Teachers’ written feedback can help students to develop their writing skills. However, several personal and contextual factors may influence feedback processes and its utilization by students. Therefore, understanding these factors is essential to improve the practice of written feedback. This study aimed to appraise the quality of written feedback in the graduate programmes and to ascertain students’ perceptions about it at a private university in Pakistan. A purposive sample of 15 participants comprised the study. The data were collected through in-depth students’ interviews and the teachers’ …

Association Between Candidate Total Scores And Response Pattern In Script Concordance Testing Of Medical Students, Michael Wan, Elina Tor Aug 2017

Association Between Candidate Total Scores And Response Pattern In Script Concordance Testing Of Medical Students, Michael Wan, Elina Tor

Elina Tor

Abstract
Introduction: The script concordance test (SCT) aims to test clinical decision making and clinical reasoning. This study is a preliminary attempt to understand an alleged test-taking strategy where students avoid extreme response options, potentially threatening the validity of SCT scores. We investigated whether there is a significant association between the propensity to avoid the extreme response options and candidates’ overall SCT scores.

Methods: The SCT scores of 660 clinical-year medical students (six cohorts from 2013–2015) were analysed for a possible association with candidates’ response pattern. The proportion of middle range response options was calculated. Propensity to avoid extreme response …

The Influence Of Psychosocial Factors On Academic Performance Of Adolescents: A Quality Assurance Project, S. A. Gulzar, Tazeen Saeed Ali, Amina Aijaz, Neesha Hussain

Tazeen Ali

Adolescence is a time of rapid psychological and physiological changes and is associated with anxiety and mental distress. This project looks at the potential of school-based programs to reduce these negative effects of academic performance in both the short- and long-term. This study was conducted in a private school in Karachi, Pakistan between October 1998 and December 2006 on 305 students with low academic performance. Results show that students scoring low grades had a mean of 55 + 2.8 and postintervention score of 56 + 2.6. The intervention package significantly created a difference in reducing the number of students receiving …

A Pilot Study Of Computerized, Tailored Intervention To Promote Hpv Vaccination In Mexican-Heritage Adolescents, Angaela Chia-Chen Chen, Michael Todd, Ashish Amresh, Usha Menon, Laura Szalacha

Ashish Amresh

This study examined feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effect of a computer-tailored intervention aimed at promoting HPV vaccination in Mexican-heritage adolescents aged 11-17. Among 46 Mexican-heritage parents who had one or more eligible children who had not received HPV vaccines, 91% (n = 42) completed the intervention and assessments via tablets in a vaccine clinic. Mean knowledge scores increased significantly from pre- to post-intervention. After the intervention, 95% (n = 40) of parents intended to get their children vaccinated; 50% (n = 21) of them consented to vaccination immediately, resulting in 24 adolescents being vaccinated at that time. All parents reported …

Evaluation Of An E-Portfolio Pilot Streamlining.Docx, Carrie Smucker

Deborah Bambini

There is need in higher education for a comprehensive electronic system that bridges administrative and curricular processes. Such a system would create an interconnected and streamlined platform that supports three aspects of administrative and curricular processes: processing graduate school applications, housing student progression files and tracking program outcomes through student projects.  Academic departments need flexible information systems to improve office processes, particularly in the areas of school application processing and student progression documents.  These departments also need a mechanism to report how their curricula are meeting benchmarks.  A comprehensive system would follow the student from the application stage to the …

Behavioral Disorders: A Nutritional Checklist For The Educational Practitioner, Ronald F. Bobner, Louisa M. Marchionda, Carolyn Ridenour, Isadore Newman, Mary J. Beaubien

Carolyn S. Ridenour

Millions of dollars are spent annually on special educational programs for children whose severe behavior disorders prevent them from participating in the regular school setting despite average or above average intellectual capacity. A growing body of research indicates that some of these behavior disorders are related to nutritional problems. (Pfeiffer and Iliev 1972; Kittler 1973; Mayron 1979; and Buckley 1977), and many clinicians support the view that no matter what the etiology of behavioral disorders, nutritional programs can improve the baseline data on medical, social and intellectual achievement, and on personality measures (Palmer 1978). Our purpose here is to present …

Kevin W. Yingling

Abstract Introduction: The Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, agencies responsible for the accreditation of medical and pharmacy schools respectively, require interprofessional education (IPE) to be integrated into both curricula. Institutions are given the autonomy to design and implement this requirement, however research is equivocal in regards to when and how best to implement IPE. The development of a new IPE curriculum is often met with a number of challenges, such as a lack of faculty support and resources. Methods: This study describes a newly created pilot IPE curriculum developed with minimal existing organizational …
